my boat is fitted with two volvo aqad41a engines when i first start them up in marina they give off alot of smoke until warmed up any one any idears of a good fuel treatment that could help cheers terry
 
My AD41s are smoky on start up from cold - espcecially if they have been left for a while. It clears once warm and given a good thrash. Its not something I have worried about. I gather we're talking about blue smoke ? ie not black or white.
 
I've got AD41P's, 5 years old, with 370 hours on the clock. When started from cold, there is no more than a whisp of smoke, EXCEPT when it's been left for several weeks. Then, they do smoke a bit more, but nevertheless, nothing much at all.
 
we all make the mistake to "let her run warm" and then put her in gear, i'v learnd in the past years, to just start her, check if all is ok and put her in gear, that reduces smoke a lot, other thing is in wintertime with cold air/oil the engine smokes more i'v solved that with an oilpanheater basic a pad you glue under the oilcarter of the boat, you plug in 1 hour before you leave so the oiltemp is already 20°C and then smokes less. if you want more info PM me

I had aqad41's in my Corniche and these are the ways I reduced the smoke

1) Renew Air filters
2) Renew crank case breathers( or the muck from these will clog your new air filters within an hour or two) I have some of these going cheap on the for sale forum.
3) Use injector cleaner once a year (Wynn's, just tip it in the tank)
4) Check the exhaust solenoids are working ( should be a clank before your heater comes on, may need a new 16amp fuse)
5) in the winter put a 240 v fan heater on in the engine bay for an hour before start up.


If by chance you have only just bought your boat you may want to pm me as my boat has just resold and I had an override procedure to cut off the exhaust flaps (brakes as someone else called them) so you will think they are on but in fact they are open, simple process from the helm to reactivate.



All these will help reduce smoke but there are only really two ways to stop a Volvo of any age smoking

A) disconnect the starter battery

B) remove and replace with Mercruiser or Yanmar /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

O yes indeed, those big Mercruiser diesel V8's have a splendid reputation for reliability, as did early Bravo III drives which never corroded, or Alpha drives that never exploded, risers/manifolds on petrol models that never clogged or leaked, individual cylinder heads on diesels that never failed and are dead cheap to replace...

And Volvo's, errm, smoke a bit when they start up. Hmm. Let me think about that for a minute...

Do we have to stop another thread in its tracks with slanging off each others engines.
I was trying to give the best advice I could and also tried to add a little humor.
Volvo's have had loads of breakdowns over the last few years but that isn't going to help another forum member reduce his smoke.

If you want a debate over reliability then start a thread on that subject.

This debate happened years ago when Perkins lost Market share to Volvo, it was the Grey haired old Perkins owners against the younger generation who wanted Volvo for performance.
Volvo owners are now the older generation and todays youth looking for performance are turning to Mercruiser and Yanmar.
Volvo Penta owners probably drive diesel Volvo cars And wear flat caps to drive in.

seriously, I would second the suggestion of an "engine warmer". The volvo kad32's on a boat I eventually bought started within half a second from "cold", and didn't smoke at all, which I found very strange, until I found electric tube heaters underneath the oil pans. Not necessarily recommended at 20knots, but the idea is a good one: something that manufacturers could build in maybe ?
