Etiquette when hit by another boat when in marina?

tails of woe.......

When my boat was only a few days old a bloke hit my bow roller big time and took off his Stbd side down the whole length of his boat. F/G flying all over the place.

I was sampling some wine with friends on the F/B and was alerted by the noise of over revving big engines in the confines of the marina. Far too much power as he bounced down the fairway.

Upshot was the guy from the brokers who were holding a second hand boat show came by as the incident unfolded and apologised for his reckless client.

His insurance man was on site within the hour and’ I ‘ was repaired by the following w/e.

Then a year latter same thing happened with pontoon neighbour (who had just brought a boat).
Again – wine was being taken on the F/B and tcm + mrs tcm, of all people (who had Diana 11 in town) were witnesses.

This time plenty of hassle despite promise of early repair. Bloke was cheap and even had the gaul to fix his own boats damage before attending to mine. In the end I had to get my own insurance peeps involved…. Neighbour moved marina soon after – so happy ever after.

Not quite, Sir!

Last year I was hit twice, once by a Sunsail yacht, then later by a bareboat charter. Neither of them came forward to acknowledge what they had done! I was told about it by locals, I posted about it at the time, Sunsail denied everything and refused to pay up, the bareboat skipper when confronted paid up and sent me new parts out to Greece.
The law out here is slightly different (I know this now) If I get hit again, I report them at once to the Port Police. The Police will impound the vessel until the damage settlement has been agreed. This does tend to speed things up!
Once bitten, and all that, but Never again.

We collected our brand new Muse 44 from Hamble a month ago. Stopped in Eastbourne to see some friends. A nice empty berth. Off to the pub..back about 45 mins later, and a Dutch sailing boat moored next to us...thought it odd they wouldn't exactly meet our eyes (my wife particularly perceptive about that sort of thing). Next stop Dover, where we discovered why! A gouge in our gel coat from their anchor! Too late! Also, we had a spare 25kg anchor(don't ask why)..so put it on the pontoon at night to get it out of the way. In the am, some **it had nicked the shackle pin...not the shackle, not the anchor, but the pin! Can you believe it?!

Lesson here to all is check your boat when someone has moored next to you.

Re: Etiquette when hit by another boat when in marina? UPDATE

Thanks for all your posts with your stories.

I thought I would update you with what I actually did yesterday morning and what subsequently happened.

Well I did go round and have a word at 8.30. Their attitude was fine although an apology would have been nice (which I never did get) but they were happy to either pay for repair or replacement and depending on costs put it through their insurance.

So we swapped details and I got a quote for replacement as I didn't think a repair was feasible nor desirable. The quote was for £165 including VAT and courier to the marina. To my utter surprise and pleasure they said they would pay and later in the day turned up with the cash! I am to supply him with the receipt from the supplier to prove the cost.

I was gobsmacked to be honest but I think that my reasonable approach in the first place regardless of how I felt contributed to the result. I didn't criticise their actions, admitted that accidents do happen and made it clear that all I was interested in was getting the damage fixed. The reality was that I really wanted to tell him that he needed some training but that would have served no purpose at all except getting his back up.

So there you have it... An unbelievable story IMO but I promise you every word true.

BTW DAKA, I have been know to argue my case robustly on the internet that is true but to say I am firey, especially in person, is completely unfair and I think you would do well to meet me first before coming to that conclusion... if I were firey as you suggest then I certainly wouldn't have completely this trip without a few barneys that is certain... I have had precisely NONE nor would I have expected any before I left.

Watch out DAKA, he's a mean son-of-a-bitch, and well known for aggressive behaviour.

Re: Etiquette when hit by another boat when in marina? UPDATE

£165 - doesn't sound too serious - what was the damage ?

Re: Etiquette when hit by another boat when in marina? UPDATE

eh? Someone hit your boat, and when you explained to them there was some damage they agreed to pay for it, what's so unbelievable?

Re: Etiquette when hit by another boat when in marina? UPDATE

Glad that it ended ok for you but isn't it a bit annoying that YOU had to visit them instead of THEM visit you. It kinds of suggests that if you hadn't witnessed it they'd have kept quiet and 'got away with it'. Disapointing because generally speaking, marinas are usually honest environments.
