Got a bit delayed posting this up last week as we spent a few days in Ko Lipe for Liz's birthday. It's 30km from Langkawi and 40-odd from Pak Bara, which is where you catch the ferry from mainland Thailand. It's a rather splendid little island and the first time we'd seen clear waters since the Maldives last year!

Here's a few pics for your perusal, followed by the link to the week's video clip, if you're interested.

Ton, one of the carpenters, puts on the handles and hinges to the cupboard doors. To the right, a freshly veneered shelving unit

Pong, our head carpenter, has been cracking on with the teak floor. It's starting to look lovely...

More teak floor loveliness

We had some pretty severe weather the other week, which took out our next door neighbour's tent. Fortunately it didn't touch his new paint job, but it set him back a day or two.

Thea, the 90ft motor boat that's been in the yard for 2 years, finally launched. Here are the yard workers working the cables and pulley system

The painters have been cracking on with the faring of the deck and there's no stopping these guys. We're almost ready to paint.

I just watched this and the next two videos, these guys are true craftsmen! The cats at the end of week 15 were a nice touch.

I wish you two all the best on your adventures and hope to see more updates soon.

It only seems confusing because like most things there is no "one best way" of doing it. The conventional way is to use contact adhesive, not the stuff you get in the sheds but the trade version. You might also get away on a horizontal surface with the type that allows some adjustment before it sets. Epoxy can also be used but you need to apply pressure while it cures. The key thing is to have clean surfaces and even application of your chosen adhesive as minor imperfections or lumps can show through on the finished surface.

Hi Baggy. I think Tranona hits the nail on the head with his answer but I can tell you the guys here use a two-part epoxy glue and then apply pressure with lots of pieces of wood, blocks, clamps and so on. Only time will tell how long it adheres but it's the way it's done here. The problem with contact adhesive is once you offer it up and touch the surfaces, that's it. It's stuck. There have been a couple of occasions where the carpenters glue the piece in place and then take it down again. It's not often that happens, but it does happen.

Thanks Chaps

I did re-surface the galley area with formica using contact adhesive ( cant remember what type II used )
as of late water ingress around taps base and sink has got under the formica laminate, lifted it and gone black
I also remember using polyester resin to seal the cut-out holes for the taps and sink

The rest of the worktop is as good as new

I suppose 10 years is pretty good really

( I think I may go down the Epoxy Glue route this time )

cheers Baggy
