As the batteries have a finite life ie 3 to 5 years and are quite expensive it may not even be worth accepting as a gift. As I understand it the 121.5 will still be used for homing in on you but it will not raise an alarm via the satelites or be monitored by aircraft so itwill only be usefull if they are looking for you after 2009. olewill
 
I have read that immediate response to these is not implemented due to so many going off unecessarily - ok as everyone says for gift but don't go deep relying on anything like that you haven't bought new or have provenance BOL
 
i wouldnt bother with it to honest! Get a 406MHz one. The 243/125's place you in a sphere of uncertainty of about 12 miles - and yes they are being completely phased out.
 
But I did see an ad - I think in PBO - from someone who was offering a discount off a new EPIRB in exchange for any old one ...
May be worth checking out.
