if my san lorenzo 57 might need engine replacing then have any of you any idea of roughly how much a replacment engine might be ?
they are detroit 730 hp.
thanks.
Roughly and I do mean roughly, you can work on anything from £100 to £150/Hp for a new engine of that size.
Fitting will be extra?
Then you have to ask yourself can I get an engine of that size into the boat without stripping the entire top deck off and more's the point can I get the old one out without destroying the boat?
750HP is not a small engine. What engine manufacturer are you considering using? Catapiller, Cummins, Gardiner, Yanmar??????
thanks Brian,
yes i will consider re build. i am just having a eye towards the worst scenario. and wondered if the worst should happen then how much would my piggy bank suffer,
regards, james
you don't say where you are, but there are good Detroit people in Aberdeen/Gt. Yarmouth. We have 16 V16 92's here on board ship, 2 of which are turbo's. All they are is basically 2 V 8s bolted end 2 end. Before you ask, no you can't have one. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I am, of course, assuming that at 735hp, yours are V8 92T's
If the engine is one of a pair, replace with a similar engine or refit the one you have. The bigger the engine, in general, the lower the cost of a rebuild compared with buying new. Hopefully, access to the engines will be via a soft patch under the afterdeck.
If 8V-92's then these motors ran crazy top ring temperatures. Even running them easy they would rarely do better than 3,000 hours before scuffing pistons and needing a cylinder kit.been involved in replacing just a few of these over the years.
#1 Point 8V-92's weigh around two tonnes. So replace with decent inline 6 4 Strokes and max power you will need is around 700 Hp and go even better and use 25% less fuel.
#1 Cost wise Volvo D12 and CAT C13 will be the most competitive on price. Volvo D12 is rock solid, whereas CAT C12 has patchy reputation with lots of unresolved failures connected to poor aftercooler design. Volvo D12 only downside is that at the 700 node it is a little heavy, around 1,400 Kg
#3 Two nice contenders at the 700 Hp node are Cummins QSM11 and Scania DI 12. Both around 1,150 Kg with solid reputations. Package a little better than the Volvo. Never be seduced into buying the Yanmar baged version of the same Scania......
MTU is actually Detroit Series 60, exellent engine in commercial ratings, however leasure rated motors have too many issues with marinising parts, and even makes the Volvo look a lightweight at around 1850 Kg.
Cost, once you are into this league you will be haggling around 35K per engine, if somebody has stock to shift you may get a wild card quote nearer to 30K per unit.
Then you need to thing about suitability of your transmission set up.
Are you sure that you are still up for this?. Plus installation VAT etc etc.
