+1 blockage between the bulb and the tank. Immediate fix is to blow back through the pipe and see if that will clear it. Had this problem regularly until I could get the tank cleaned. Lump of muck would get sucked against the fuel pick up pipe, leading to fuel starvation and in my case complete stoppage each tme until the pipe could be cleared. Fun that was off Portland Bill!

Thanks for all the advice so far. the primary filter only has a couple of hours on it and seems spotless as does the separator. This is a boat which is used exclusively for racing and the engine only has 250 hrs all in fresh water. The engine is very well minded and serviced annually regardless of hours.

If the Volvo engine installation includes the Volvo tank plate and fuel pickup pipe, there's usually a fine mesh filter on the end - a cylinder about 2.5cm diameter (see pic). This can get clogged by crud in the tank and cause fuel starvation. It mystified me for a while.
