I've also seen mechanics do that here as well.
Thin motoroil (10SAE 20SAE) in diesel. Their argument is that it lubricates better after any water in diesel issue and "saves" the pump in the long run.
Typically done in the first tankful to make sure there's no time for rust to settle in.
Not sure how scientific or helpful that is tbh.
