Engine maintanance course recommendation

How about an approach starting with a list of problems/issues that could potentially occur whilst under way or on start up/shut down that you tick off as you cover either by reading manuals and practising on your own engine or having someone show/explain, again if possible on your own engine? Could work from the troubleshooting chart in the engine manual or make own list/chart of symptoms, causes and solutions? E.g:

1 Can't find the key!
2 Engine not turning over
3 Engine turning over but will not start
4 Engine starts but cuts out under load

etc.

I think being able to troubleshoot the electrical side a bit, change all the consumables and bleed the engine will cover most eventualities, any more than that you're unlikely to be doing at sea anyway...

Tony Brooks used to do a really good course which was way beyond RYA Diesel course but not quite MCA AEC. Unfortunately he has retired now, but his course notes are still on his website and may be useful.

He also did a course on boat electrics, which I attended. It didn't equip me to argue with experts but enough confidence to do some trouble shooting and repairs.
