I recently purchased a 28 ft cruiser which i think dates back to the 70s.
It is fitted with 2 ford sabre? 80 hp diesel engines and i have no idea of their age but the engine no on one of them is
743F6090AAA
They are both blue.
I would like to find out a bit more about them so if anyone can help or provide technical info i would be very grateful

1974 ( the 74 in the number is the model year the 3 is the type ). If my memory is correct 74 was the change year from Dorset to Dover engine. If it has a pressed tin front cover it is a Dorset, alloy front cover was Later ( and better) Dover
Both Good engines , pretty bomb proof. Spares becoming " challenging"

Thanks for the information.
Another question....the diesel pumps fitted to these engines have cold start buttons on the throttle arms, they are a real pain to get at.means i have to remove the seats and engine covers to get at every time i want to start the engine.
From your experience do you know of any way to make the cold starts operate from remote source
Appreciate your advice

Yes ther used to be a bracket available from mermaid with an attached cable that you pulled to push in the cold start button , however your engine service if in good order should not require the cold start button unless it's below freezing outside, if that's the case you have engine issues somewhere , which may relate to poor feeling or a compression issue.

Frank,
What you have there is the Ford Dorset either 2711E or 2712E models.
Regarding the cold start button, you could speak to Stephen or Richard at the Poole office who could advise if Mermaid or Sabre ever had a remote operating device for the excess fuel button. (Tel: 01202-677776).
I know there was a lever type device on the end of a cable on the D series truck and we used some on industrial applications such as tow tractors, but I haven't seen one for years.
We can still do parts for these engines or full reconditioned engines and we can supply workshop manuals on a pdf download for free if that helps.
If you need a manual, PM me your address and I'll send you one on a memory stick.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Best regards
Jon

This engine may be the same one as fitted to Ford Tractors. Like the Perkins engines in boats are also the ones fitted in Massey Ferhusin Tractors.
I have someone who has stored an old Ford Tractor and he has been offered £1000 for the engine. Parts are available.
