I have found an alternative to halon extinguishers which claims to be more effective, smaller and more cost effective. It also haso a 10 year life. The product is called Pyrogen and you can get information on www.pryogen.com. The USA office answered my email and said he would get the UK office to contact me tomorrow. I understand, from the blurb, that the product is MCA approved. I will post the result of the call tomorrow

Chris,
I tried your link, and pyrogen.com, but no go. No connection to either spelling site. I will await your further information.

I've got a charter boat, and don't want any accidents either with fire or powder extinguishers. At the moment, I have two small Halon auto extinguisher inside the engine compartment. These will have to be replaced with something in the coming two years. So until then - they stay.

regards,
Philip

Ohh those v8\'s

Ahh the v8's OK - but those have not been deemed illegal (yet!). I agree that halon is the best thing around and will certainly be keeping mine for as long as possible - but I accept that it changes. If I get a new boat this year, I think I can still get halon based system fitted but soon I won't. And that's that - time to use something else.

The boat is charter coded, and the extinguishers have an expiry date on them.

The extinguishers will not have been used, but their time is up - according to the date. And my coding will not be renewed if they are not replaced - but what with??? Hopefully a good replacement for halon and not powder - as at present.

regards,
Philip

Mine were out of date, I took them to Dart fire, Totnes, they checked them, weighed them, stuck on a sticker and gave them a new lease of life. I'm also coded, MCA 1.

I know of somebody, but I'm sorry he won't do them for you, I asked. But I'm sure there are official people if you know what I mean, nudge nudge.
