Does anyone know how many engine batteries are required for a Volvo Penta D3 170 HP. I am not on the boat at moment. Is it 1 or 2 batteries ? What size would be best ?

The number of batteries is not important. For starting an engine with a lead-acid battery, first, you need sufficient Ah (amp hours) of battery capacity. For my 200hp VP the VP pec is 140Ah , although I have 170Ah. Secondly, you also need sufficient cca (cold cranking amps). Not sure what VP specify but I have 1000cca.

The tech data section of the manual I have consulted l says 2 x 12volt 88Ah batteries in parallel but I note differences for other versions of the D3-170
It would be advisable to check the physical dimensions and also if left or right handed polarity matters.

I believe the only benefit of having two 88Ah batteries in parallel is that a single 170Ah is exceptionally heavy (about 40kg) and not advisable if you have a weak back! However, I have yet to find a 88ah ish battery with a 1000cca

If you have 2 batteries in parallel they only have to be 500 cca each if you require 1000 amps total
