Emsworth 3/4 tide moorings

PS Thanks for your description of the Emsworth mud, I'll be able to use the helicopter story to instill some healthy respect for the stuff.

Is that a good idea? Chance of a ride in a helicopter.... ? :) Reportedly when Drum lost her keel off Falmouth the Lifeboat tried to pick the crew up off the capsized hull, but they all kept moving to the other side - hoping for a helo lift!

The mud story here: http://www.hayling.co.uk/news/story641.html Reported elsewhere she had nipped over the side to answer the call of nature.

I've got 9 yr old twin boys so that Prinstead tragedy is logged. Very sad.

Back to favourite launch sites for Emsworth moorings, particularly for 22ft shallow draft boats.:)

That's a great pub - and there is a wall just outside that you can tie up to at HW so you can go in for a pint ...

Hmm - I wonder what the depth is there ... might be able to get there with a shoal keel ...

...that's a good question, and the honest answer would be that I don't have an accurate answer, but I can say that I think that wall - that runs alongside the slipway - must be at least five or six feet from mud to top, and on a spring the water can be up to about a foot or foot and a half below the top.... so I reckon about 4 or 5 feet depth on a spring....??

One for the 'Darwin Awards'.

Hmm - might have to have a run around there with a tape measure at some point - sounds like it could be touch and go ... so might have to give it a miss unless it's a high springs .... can't rush a pint!!

The EYH slip has a winch, padlocked, but key from office, and you can usually easily find somewhere to leave the car, esp. now Tarquin customers are not around.
2010 Slip fee will be on their website.
Great thing is you can launch using the winch at 4 hrs or so before HW, and faff around using the space at top of A pontoon ready to go out to the mooring when the tide serves.
Then if something goes pear shaped, you can at least leave the boat there afloat while you sort it.
Two things-
1)mind the mud at the end of the slip and to it's left if tide out- from personal experience!
2)hang an old towel over winch wire- Darwin Award candidate cyclists using "footpath" have low literacy scores where large " All Cyclists Dismount" signage throughout Yard is concerned(we used to paint little bikes on "Vulpes Exp.' trailer for everyone we got when we launched!).
