Now every sailor can be cheered by the amazing Ellen MacArthur in her magnificent Open 60 class Kingfisher.
Forget for a time firemen's strikes, winter weather, the diesel bug, marina rentals and even boring smutty contributions to sailing and boating web sites!
Sylvie Viant, race director and herself an ocean sailor said 'Ellen is the greatest female solo sailor of all time'. Surely she inspires all sailors and shows true grit. She hacked through 60 knot gales, kept going when others eased, saved several nasty on board perils and spurs us out to sea. Warm was her welcome as she srrived first of all the great Route du Rhum fleet at Pointe-a-Pitre yesterday evening. Ellen; you are the best and your supporting sponsor and team.

We couldn't agree more. Please will all who enter this chatroom deride 'depsol' (or is it ar.sol) for his childish outburst. Ellen is a superb ambassador for the sport and all reasonable sailors, whether armchair sailors or those who get out onto the water should applaud her efforts. Well done Ellen

Is that why she goes solo? Nobody prepared to go with her?

Cheap gibe, I know. To be honest I think that she's quite remarkable. I'm sure that she's got a lot more to achieve.

Sorry pal . You are out of order BIG style on this . I don`t care if she is a miserable cow something I do not belive you said. SHE is still the very very very BEST ,
How come someone who could be this good be put down by a NOBODY like yourself BOB T

Err indoors told me to tell you that she’s fab cos she’s a northerner, I agree and I’me from East London, when I saw her going up that mast ! That took some guts; anybody that disagrees must be a brain donor! “Come on Ellen give it some welly”

Wishbone
By the way she went to the same yachting school as me David King Yachting (formerly of Hull), Nice Guy! top teacher“

Yes, she is, we should be proud of her, and also Mike Golding - don't forget it was a UK 1-2. How many sports do we do that in these days , hmm?

Give Ellen her credit it's a tremendous human achievement no matter whether you think it's a sensible thing to be doing with your time or not.

She may or may not be miserable, after all she didn't answer my email (can't think why...) but she's proven again to be a first-rate world-class sailor and a credit to our sport.

Well done she, I say, can't wait for the video.

After all her achievements, both personal and for sailing, if she is a "miserable cow" (which I doubt) it's little wonder with ingrates like you and your pathetic comments.
Really glad your boating again - now you can get out there and emulate what Ellen's done. Let's see how chipper you are at the end of it!!
This woman is a phenomonen without question.

Is the brain still alive Sailbad...? [mad/url]

Tend to agree with you Dom. Someone ought to tell her that she's not supposed to set off flares except in an emergency situation. I don't think copmleting a race is an emergency situation!

Get a life you lot!

Such a magnificent achievement (winning, beating the multihulls, beating the previous record) is worthy of more than this childish derision.

It surprises me that a yachting forum can't be more generous in recognising the sheer guts of a girl who has gone through so much to get where she is. I for one would dread the thought of going aloft in the conditions she did.

I salute her and hope I'm not alone.

Hear, hear

Ellen's achievements are remarkable by any standard.

I don't understand the readiness of people on this forum to belittle or put down others - not matter how great their experience or achievements. There seems to be very little generosity of spirit on thie board.

You dont even know me so how can you call me a nobody. I am the Godfather of Guernsey title being given to me by Piers.

She may be good but it doesnt hurt to smile!

She is an ambassador for the sport as everyone keeps telling me so does that mean all yachties are miserable sods cos thats what she is representing.

Dom

I am boating again ;-)

That's fighting talk, Dom. Keep it up.

So easy to wind up, this lot, aren't they? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I met her, sitting in the petite Iduna, on Press Day at Earls' Court 93 Boat Show. She was charming, friendly and just exhuded a passion for sailing.

Perhaps you're confusing grumpiness with absolute exhaustion? I have steered a race-ready Whitbread 60 for about 15 minutes and the scale of the beast, the power and the acceleration just took my breath away. I have total admiration for anyone who handles a yacht of that size and power solo, whether they finish first or last in the Vendee.

Not wishing to add to this debate (Ok so I do wanna add to it) - anyway - her achievements are without doubt excellent, I cannot understand how anyone could wish to be out of port in those conditions, let alone racing and then winning it.

I'm sure she was exhausted - (I am just making a cuppa tea). But her share of personality was obvioulsy swapped for sheer brilliance in Sailing Skills department. Not many people can combine sheer sporting excellence and be a "character" - Sir Steve Redgrave, Gary Linneaker, Sue Barker, Ali McCoist, James Hunt come the closest. But the list of those who are lacking is endless.........

Sorry guys don't knock what she hasn't got - Admire what she has !!!! and here is a smile to make up for it /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Fair point, but I'm a miserable old sod, so how come I'm not brilliant in the sailing skills department?

I just hope that people aren't going to start putting her on a pedestal.

Geoff,

You're only jealous 'cos a raggie won, not a stinkpot! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

PS Please, nobody respond to this posting. It is a joke. I didn't mean it. I withdraw the comment. It wasn't me etc etc

Speak French -go faster!

It's not just guts - she had a secret weapon according to the press release'

''Sylvie Viant, president of the RdR race committee said earlier today, "Ellen MacArthur is the greatest female solo sailor in all time. She is brilliant in all categories, she speaks perfect French, "

I'm starting evening classes in French to add that extra knot ...
