Electric vehicles and towing

My regen works from 100%. If you imagine, the moment you pull away after a 100% recharge you will start to deplete the battery (unless you're pointing down a hill)!

Mine is the same - if I lift off the accelerator and I've literally just unplugged it will say "battery at 100% regeneration not available - but 100 yards down the road it seems to work OK.

But what of Lord Elon’s words?‍♂️

Unless there is something major missing in the write up by the reporter ......... Mr Musk is talking a load of unscientific rubbish.

i believe it is correct that it is better to on,y charge this type of batteries to 95% or so, to increase battery life.
But it is mathematical nonsense to suggest that it does further than if charged to 100% “because at 100% the regen doesn’t work”.

Clearly even if it was extremely inefficient, the Tesla would surely drive at least 10-20 miles on 5% of charge. Now the car is on 95% of charge, and it goes a range from there - say 300miles. The range from 100% is still 10-20 miles further than if had started at 95%.

I use more fuel on a single weekend on the boat than my Disco uses in a year. I'm not against electric but the savings dont sell it to me. 98 pence a mile cost of ownership seems extraordinarily steep to me too. I'm averaging close to a third of that. Not sold.

98p a mile?

I have done 7994 miles in my car and spent £15 in fuel so that is £0.0018 per mile in fuel. The car after govt grant was £34000 and I see they are still going for about £30k second hand.

So fuel is miniscule, depreciation is less than anything else I know for a brand new car, £0 road tax and so far £0 company car tax......

Not sure it gets much cheaper than that - certainly if you can run a Disco for that I'd be impressed although I concede it won't tow 3500kg or seat 7 so not directly comparable.

I didn’t want to argue, I think Elon Musk is a Time Lord like Dr Who. He can make the illogical come true

I think he means rapid charge too.

They suggest 20-80% is optimum for rapid charge, but up to 100% is fine on normal 3 pin or 7.2 kw domestic charge

I think the heat that is generated with the DC supercharging is heat can cause the long term damage.AC charging is much better for regular use.

I understand that the displayed percentage of battery remaining isn’t the full battery capacity. The useable part of the battery leaves a little at the top and bottom to protect the longevity of the battery.

Nope - Octopus do an electric car tariff - 5p between midnight and 6am

I am not on it, I don’t have a charger at home as I can usually charge at work - and we have a local free public charger...

But I am now furloughed, and so am thinking of getting the octopus one but holding out to see what Bulb are going to offer - rumours are they are going to undercut Octopus.

thats interesting - 5 p overnight. I wonder If I can run my heat pump overnight to push heat into the room so the daytime demand will be lower?

Not a bad car for towing - and its electric... might be a bit pricey (77,000 US$ - but compared to a full fat range rover (£120,000) not too bad.)

3.0sec to 60
14,000NM of torque at any speed
5000kg tow weight
7 seats in the SUV and 5 + a big storage area + load bed in the Pickup

I sort of like it!

I really like them. would be great to have a test drive in one when they’re available over here.

I have no idea when that is. The US site just went live for proper US orders, so I think they are a fair way off yet. I didn't realise just how massively well funded they are. Full backing of Amazon, with an almost bottomless chequebook and I think behind the scenes there is a bit of Jeff Bezos vs Elon Musk pleasant competition....

I hope they launch a smaller truck that will still tow 3500kg but perhaps not quite as big or as dear - but that might not be for many years.

No. I wish I hadn’t bothered changing from a perfectly adequate and better built 6 series gran coupe. I still have the old car and I’m toying with the idea of getting rid of the Tesla but the issues need to be sorted before this decision can be made.
Can you not reject it and get a refund?

I have tried but it is not a major fault to them. I have a Tesla approved body shop who have looked at the car and they are telling me that every panel bar the front bumper will need to be resprayed and sorted properly. If Tesla say no to this work then I have a solicitor on standby. I’m hoping I don’t have to go down that route on the grounds of cost and time.
