I like them, they do a certain job very well. Regular use over short distance with no need for prolonged speed, basically. I used mine all weekend, manouvering around the marina, end of the day stuck the small battery on charge and that was that - no fuel, no mess and free* to run.

I have one for my tender (8ft). On full speed it gives about 3 or 4 knots. I once tried it on the back of my 27ft boat and got about a quarter of a knot at full whack.

With careful use you can get a couple of hours from a 75ah leisure battery. But use on on full speed all the while and you can half that.

Have a look at Torqeedo electric motors. Impressive performance quoted and very light integral battery. Expensive.
