Electric blanket

I have been researching the Webasto's e.t.c. and due to safety worries after a reply from Eberspacher I was wondering whether I could 'safely' use electric blankets on the boat. I have an 1,000 invertor plus 2x 135amp batteries, I also have a 1,000 generator, but I don't really fancy going to sleep attached to a live generator /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif So how long could I sleep for attached to my battery, and would the invertor damage them.

Only a thought as it is getting a little chilly and I would like to make use of it in the winter. For outside I have bought a hat and gloves as well as ski underwear and thick socks, but this would be a bit bulky in bed.

(SWMBO has bought a foot spa and I fear this could drain the batteries so she will have to be attached to the generator when using that)

Any SENSIBLE help would be appreciated /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hot water bottle, warm duvet and when on shore power leave an oil filled radiator on and you will be lovely and warm all night.
 
Thanks, this is my first sort of real cruiser type boat with bedrooms and bathroom, I don't want to be freezing my nuts off or what is the point in having it, I could have been cosy in my cuddy /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

SWMBO has given me the mid cabin, I am wondering if that is the cold one as she is quite intelligent /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I was planning to put central heating throughout the boat using an Eberspacher hot water heater system, but was advised that all the radiators would add weight to the boat. I then looked at hot air, but swmbo said there was enough of that around already /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif No actually, she thought that hot air was better and would have agreed to do without the hot water filled towel rail, but then the question of waking up dead through deadly fumes came into it through safety concerns I have heard about. I have not given up total hope of getting hot air so I am still researching the problems that they talk about to see if I can get a radar arch fitted and the heater mounted on that by the radar (not got radar yet but a good excuse to get one if I get away with getting the arch by telling swmbo it is required for the heating /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif).

Looks like I will have to get down to the camping shop, but all a bit sad when I thought I had bought a luxury cruiser to woo the bride in, I may as well sleep in a blinking tent and forget all about the romantic warm candle lit master bedroom (well mid cabin bunk) with the aroma of freshly made ground coffee and log 'effect' fire /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Given that we have most home comforts - albeit scaled down to fit out bit of tin - and having noticed two narrowboats on the Thames this year with air conditioning units, I'm beginning to wonder if things are not going a wee bit mad.

That said we have acres of insulation to keep the worst cold at bay overnight plus a wood burner stove.

Anyway your question was about power consumption. Don't electric blankets take about 20watts? If so that's 200 watthours overnight, that's 16.6' amphours. Not much of a drain.

Much simpler is a nice duvet with lots of togs, a hottie to take the initial chill off and a cuddle - of either variety - to get the temperature off. Less CO2 emissions as well!

Oh, for God's sake! Buy an Eberspacher/Webasto/whatever from the swindlers. Get some bloke to fit it - it isn't exactly rocket science. Remember to turn it off while you're running the main engines. How hard can it be?

Leccy blankets off an inverter? No problem: they burn sod all power, and you only need them on for an hour before going to bed to take the chill off the bedding. Luverly. We bought some last year, and they really make a difference in winter.

Electric Blankets are far from safe.

I used to work for an Insurance company and one claim I dealt with is really at the front of my mind here.

Old Lady aged 87 went to sleep and forgot to turn her elctric blanket off.

Damage

Duvet
Under Blanket
Candlewick bedspread
Mattress
New electric blanket
New night dress
dressing gown
Bedroom carpet

Her friend dragged her out of the smouldering bed and the '2ft thick' beding then scorched the carpet that they threw a bucket of water on.
The old lady was un hurt with no burn marks.
 
CG1, separate bedrooms?! No wonder you are cold. What you need is a nice pair of Wincette pajamas. You'll be as snug as a bug in rug.

You could try sneaking in next door once the snoring starts.

As to the radar arch mounted heater. Have you thought about one of those mini patio heaters? http://www.eurocosm.com/Application/Products/Patiodd/Table-patio-heater-GB.asp

You could cut down the leg and feed the gas pipe up through the radar arch steel work. Get a toasting fork and you are well away.

Be careful though. Toast crumbs are a pain when they get inside your PJ's
 
Just find something you're allergic to and wipe it all over yourself before going to bed. It'll feel just like an electric blanket and wont drain the batteries.
 
why don't you get some of those heat up slippers, though you can of course wear them all day, I'm sure you would get away with it, that heat up in the microwave

or go to bed with your blackberry in vibrating mode like you told me to !
 
Serious answer, if you really want one!
Water heating webasto, use, the plastic insulated piping, use the car type heater elements and fans, From eber or webasto etc. low weight. When the engines are running, you can use the waste heat, form the cooling sytem, as you would for a calorifier, to heat your units, when at rest, use the eberspracher. Solved, consultancy fee, will be forwarded!
 
The foot spa is in the cupboard under the kitchen sink, it is no problem at all in fact it is quite pleasant and does not use much water.

The log effect fire may sound plain daft but it is very pleasing to the eye and does NOT give off heat, only for effect.

As for the patio heater I have a table one but it nearly fell over when the wake of a big power cruiser hit us whilst I was down below getting the sausages out of the cool box! I have since BARRED it from the boat as a dangerous bit of kit so DO NOT recommend it /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

This is my third boat, I am moving up 2ft a year so will be competing with the big boys in about 2020 /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Easy does it, no rush, safety is crucial, just hope when I get to 50ft there is enough room for all the gear I am accumulating, I have a conservatory 5mtrs by 4mtrs and I promise you it is FILLED with stuff I took off my boat, goodness knows how it got on there, there was stuff in every nook and cranny, hoover and Microwave I had forgot about, spares of just about every part possible, an engine (only a mercury 3.5hp) that I had put in one of the cupboards and clean forgot about, stupid thing was I bought another because I could not find it, it was behind the spare fenders water skis and shark /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Anyway I will have to have a boot sale I found 4 GPS systems, and I have just bought all new stuff at the boatshow for the new boat /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I even found the laminated list of what was on the boat down behind a cushion /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

At least I have another 2ft now, and the new 24ft boast is higher so I can fit in the chest of drawers /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I am still trying to find a way of turning the shower room into a steam room, I have found steam generators just need to find a safe way of fitting it, any technical help would be appreciated /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
Definitely get a warm air system. Keeping yourself nice and warm in bed whilst the rest of the boat is cold will have you waking up in a soaking wet boat.

You should always have a window or two open at night to help stop the condensation.

I doubt if you'll be anchored up overnight too often in the winter so having shore power and a fan heater will suffice. Radiators aren't much cop cause they don't circulate the air. Dehumidifier is a must if sleeping on boat

Note to self: must get an eberspacher
