EHIC

Poor chap - the OP.
Came on here to warn of a threat to our "Unalienable Rights" and gets slagged off and cross-examined by the deeply articulate members of the forum.
No doubt he thought that, like the Daily Mail, he'd get universal support and approbation - instead the nit-picking members of this forum have totally obscured the issue by introducing FACTS-

THAT IS UNFAIR - UNBRITISH and you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves.

I don't care.

Most of the information quoted in this thread is a load of half baked rubbish that I have become accoustomed to.

If you are an expat residing in the EU then your EHIC is issued by the NHS. If you challenge the request for form filling and telephone calls the NHS will reissue if you ask them nicely by email.

Please yourself.

Because he wanted to speak to ME personally. That is what PM's are for.

But your question asked for specific information which would be of interest to anyone who is in the same position as the OP.

Ok then.

Richard, can you PLEASE supply the email address to get the cards re-newed. Thanks.

Don't post it here though, please pm as it's a secret.

Healthcare seems to be what trips every early retiree expat eventually. Here in Spain you need to be working or a pensioner to get free health care, so once your EHIC runs out, its back to the UK to get that operation you need. The moral of the story is make sure you can afford private health insurance if you are planning to retire early abroad.

So after reading the info in this thread, I thought nothing ventured etc and sent this mail:

Dear Sir/Madam

Can you please confirm that as a British national and resident for the first 50+ years of my life and a previous EHIC holder (now expired) and living in France, I am still entitled to a NHS issued EHIC card.

The web site is ambiguous in that it says "if you are from the UK", I am, but asks for a UK address for renewal.

Your response would be appreciated.

Regards,

David Smith.

That is crystal clear. What is the problem? Perhaps I might be able to help as I got the exact same reply and answered the questions. They have posted me and my wife new EHIC's.

Well I'm sorry but I disagree, several questions remain for me, mainly:

**By replying to this email and providing the following information you are declaring that you have a valid S1/E121 which was issued to you from the country you currently reside in, due to you receiving an exportable UK benefit**

Now, I can research these and try to understand, but the fact that I don't know what they are probably means that I don't have/don't qualify for them.

Also,

Are your circumstances still the same as when you last applied for your EHIC? (Yes/No)

Well yes, I now live in another country as I explained.

All I really needed is a qualified answer to my question, "can I still get an EHIC card if I live abroad?"

I suspect that the issue is that I am not yet at retirement age (UK) and if so, then OK, but is it really that difficult to have a "FAQ" page?

I think that's your problem. The S1 form is usually issued when you begin to receive a state pension, if you're not (yet) receiving a state pension I rather suspect you'll need a UK address to renew your EHIC. Though you can do it online.

Send the email back to them and state YES in capitol letters as that is the only answer that they require. That is what I did and got my new EHIC's for me and my wife.
