Confit de canard is as described, but one warms up the already cooked duck legs in the fat, then cook potatoes in it. YUM. Save the rest for later. Like cous-cous potatoes. (par boiled, shaken in the pot with cous-cous, then roasted in duck fat).

Watayottie, after an unfortunate incident when our engine failed just after take-off.. Not being able to get home,I ended up dossing in a pilot friend's flat for the night. Dinner was 'C' rations liberated from the USAF. Actually not bad, but all in tins, mostly without labels. Gives 'Pot Luck' a new twist.
 
Are there any fresh vegetables (as opposed to carbs like potatoes) that keep for a reasonable time?

Also I realise that a lot of the 'stock ingredients' meals I eat at home rely on cheese (e.g. pasta with tomato based sauce), so are there cheeses that are reasonably similar to cheddar (versatile enough to melt into meals or put on sandwiches) but last a long time out of the fridge?

I remember my grandmother preserving runner beans in salt. Just add salt, no water, to the sliced beans. They keep remarkably crisp for a year or so.

About £15 delivered, and they are mostly pretty good.

Military rations in general don't have any particular advantages for use on a boat, though. Fine if you have a supply of them available and no interest in cooking, and I suppose they'd be useful logistically if you needed to feed X men for Y days and didn't have easy access to normal shops, but otherwise you're better off just popping down to the supermarket.

I wonder if it’s only men who are supposed to rub goose fat and wintergreen on their chests. And what on earth is wintergreen?
 
Cans of duck confit and cassoulet available at Waitrose. Also long life pouches of sliced potatoes with bacon and onion to fry in a pan

Even after a long idle day of forking good food, that sounds exceedingly appetising.

I bought a can of so-called "Spanish Chilli" at Sainsbury yesterday. Looks like a tasty mix.
