In the most appalling conditions (Sat & Sun) my lad Edward got his PB2. The course was at Pwllheli and on the Friday night the winds were just outrageous - an F12 was registered at one point. The course was conducted in an F8/9 and the sea state was rough - the harbour wasn't too bad though.

Sunday was worse as the wind backed round to the SW and blew the sea into 8 foot waves. But fair play to the lad, he stuck with it whilst soaking wet and freezing cold and now has his certificate.

So...I can now relax with my Martinis whilst an unpaid skipper does all the work! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The lad did do good! How old is he? I have to say that I prefer it when the wind's up a bit on courses - it gives students an opportunity to be taught how to cope better. When it's flat calm and no wind I feel that students don't really get full benefit. Mind you 9/10 is a bit testing!!! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

He's 13 and he's been boating with me since he was 9. He absolutely loves motor-boats - anything to do with them at all. Not to fussed on sail though, but to be properly involved he will have to learn some saily stuff.

When it comes to recognising boats, he's like one of those WW2 pilots that can make out exactly the type and model from just a sillouette!

Lots of things can change for a 13 year old - but he does want to make a carrer in the leisure boat market, and I hope he does!

Congrats and LPG

Many congratulations to Ed - it must have been really tough, was in Guernsey but really didn't fancy even getting in a boat in that weather - the plane was plenty lively enough. Slight change of tack - how's your LPG supply holding up, ours seems fine but the tank in Guernsey has gone. However the gas suppliers there have agreed to nip down with the tanker and the appropriate filler (at 31p per litre) as long as they have 1 day's notice! Will the situation change if diesel goes up and what was the predicted price of LPG on that pump shown in MBY? Must be the time of year since I always worry about gas supplies about now!

all the best,

Matt

Re: Congrats and LPG

Hi Matt

LPG still holding up in Pwllheli, There are now quite a few boats converted. If we lose derogation for red, it could mean the renaissance of LPG. Also, on the marina estate we have one of the north wests largest Range Rover LPG converters and sellers of LPG, so that helps. 34p/lt is what we are paying now.

By the way - you may have guessed that this is Ed's Dad, Ed is at scool right now, he's 13. So he did OK to his PB2, and he's rightly proud of it.

Re: Congrats and LPG

Hi Dave,

Glad to hear that LPG is still holding up, we now have an integrated set up at Warsash where conversions can be done (very well by Brian Holman) he also does servicing and gas is available all on the same pontoon. Three conversions are underway as we speak and I think you're right about Red going. Only downside is that Warsash Marine are charging 45p/lt but we can nip along the coast and get LPG much cheaper at Lymington. Mananan is only coming out of the water for a month this year as she's now a five minute walk from the door and we use her tons. We had a full cover put on so despite her narrowness she's comfy for the four of us for long weekends and she has heating so we don't freeze.

I did guess that you're Ed's dad - its a fantastic achievement, and I'll use the story to inspire Connor (currently 11 but already a fine dinghy helm) to get practicing on Mananan, who (despite her looks) is a pussycat to handle - there that should guarantee me crunching her this weekend.

If you're ever in the Solent area and interested feel free to pm me to arrange getting together and "gassing".

cheers,

Matt

And Happy new year to you and your family.

BTW Dave, Weather over New year was horrible, so we didn't get any descent pics.

Will keep trying though.
