Hi, it seems there are some Eberspacher experts lurking here, so i'll try with my problem.
I recently picked up a D1LC 24v, but it came without a control ECU. I managed to find a 'new, old stock' ECU and tried to fire it up.
The fan runs fast, the Glow relay pulses once, then the fuel pump pulses quite fast, about 2/sec, but it does not fire up. Diesel starts dripping out of the exhaust, and this goes on (I stopped it manually)
I have inspected the internals and it looks like new, like its never been run.
I have checked the sensors & glow plug, they all measure as per the manual says.
I removed the glow plug an put 12v briefly onto it, it heats.
The glow relay is working, but the ECU only ever pulses it once.
Supply is a good 25.2 V

Any ideas?

Can't help directly, I'm just getting the kit together to bench test a similar collection of bits ready for fitting to the boat - but 12V. In case you don't have it, the manual for the D1LC can be downloaded from eberspacher.com. There is also a lot of useful information about troubleshooting and such on the Le Tonkinois website - I believe it gives the timing of the start-up process, including when and for how long the glowplug should be alight. It's mostly about the D2 with references back to the D1LC compact, but the principles are the same.

It doesn't sound right that the glowplug just gets a pulse, the relay should engage for a couple of minutes - see below quote from Le Tonkinois:

How the D2 heater should start if there is no fault. The D4 and D1LCC sequences are at bottom of page.
Stage 1 Switch on.
When the D2 heater is switched on, the indicator light in the controller illuminates showing the heater is on.
There will be a small click in the heater as the relay switches power on.
Stage 2 Pre start checks.
Control unit does an electrical check of the glow pin, flame sensor, temperature sensor, fuel metering pump and control unit.
The fan may pulse once or turn slowly.
Stage 3 Preheat.
Glow pin is energized and starts preheating the combustion chamber.
Blower turns slowly for about 40 seconds, then increases speed slightly.
Stage 4 Fuel on.
At 60 second point pump starts, increasing pump speed for 5 seconds then drops immediately to medium pumping rate,
at same time fan speed increases gradually up to medium.
White smoke which is the result of incomplete combustion of the diesel fuel may come from exhaust.
Ignition takes place as the fuel air mixture contacts the glow pin.
When heater "catches" white smoke stops and you hear a jet like noise which increases.
Once the flame detector detects the flame, in the manual this is shown occurring at the 80 seconds point which is possibly fairly
typical, the glow pin will then remain on for a further 60 seconds (140 seconds point in the example).
However if the heater does not ignite within 90 seconds after starting the fuel pump the start is repeated.
If the heater still does not ignite after another 90 seconds of pumping fuel, the heater is switched off,
i.e. the fuel supply is off and the fan runs on for about 4 minutes.
At 100 second point fan speed and pump rate increase.
At 260 second point the heater is at maximum fan speed, pump speed, fuel quantity and roaring noise.
Once the heat exchanger reaches optimum temperature it switches into control mode, the pump rate and fan speed are controlled by the ECU to give the required heat output.

When the heater is switched off, the fuel pump stops and the glow pin is switched on for 40 seconds to clean off any combustion residues. The fan speed gradually reduces, it continues to run for 4 minutes to cool the heater.
If the heater is restarted and the heat exchanger is too hot the fan will run to cool it before restarting.

Hi, yes i've already found the 'tonkinois' site, and all of the manuals. but i cant find any reference to this particular fault mode.
The early units, have a fault code which is read by the flash of the LED on the control knob. My old unit gave 2 flashes for 'Faulty ECU' but the new ECU shows no fault.
However i'm beginning to think that its a bad ECU, I will probably try to exchange it.

Is it the model with the big coil resistor inside the unit I recal something about those relays, one just pulses the current the other type just pumps power through this great big resistor then uses a 12v glow plug. models 1689 and 1768 have the resistor 1775and 1831 have the switching relay.
( but beware the brain has gone)

Yes its the 1775 type, it has another 12v glow plug in series. So i believe you are correct that it switches them on constantly for the warm up. However mine just pulses once, then pumps diesel through until i stop it.
