Hi all, just bought a eberspacher d2 diesel heater off ebay but now a guy from eberspacher uk will not install it, says its not marine grade so 600 quid down the drain ? How do i make it marine grade if at all poss, cheers
 
What does he mean though about not been marine grade ? Iv heard the cheaper chinese imports going for 120 quid arnt marine grade but eberspacher supposed to be pretty good, havnt a clue myself

Maybe it's designed for vehicle use (i.e. a truck or campervan) rather than a boat. As said above, I doubt an independent will be so picky
 
Isnt it dangerous to have it insalled if it isnt marine grade ? On the discription before i bought it, it stated that it was marine grade or i wouldnt have ordered it, i think the guy from eberspacher uk wasnt pleased that i bought the heater for 600 quid when ebespacher retail them at 18 hundred quid, plus iv bought a seperate plastic tank but he says it needs to be steel, any views please
 
Don't think there is any difference in the heater. I think the marine ones are supplied with a different exhaust muffler and skin fitting at least the webasto ones. Indien not so difficult to fit if you take your time. One the newer model be carefull to prime the fuel line to the heater so it does not go into lock mode due to too many starting attempts. One trick is to manually pulse the lift pump from the power source. Fitted 3 so far to my boats.
 
Is it actually an Eberspacher or is it a Russian made heater that looks like one? If the later then almost certainly made by Planar which is why the Eberspacher guy won’t touch it. You need to talk to the guys at Planar UK for install help, they are really great with customer service, contact them through https://planarheaters.co.uk, hope that helps, cheers
 
Hi, its deffo a eberspacher, its written all over the box, has airtronic on the heater itself, theres instruction booklet with ebinspacher logo everywhere, even on the included dvd so its deffo a ebinspacher, the guy that viewed it, his only problem with it was he said it wasnt marine grade, anyone any thoughts on steel or plastic tank ?

My (original equipment) diesel heater, same tech as an Eber, has a plastic tank.
 
Do you have to put a safety certificate on your boat? If so check with your inspector as he will tell you if a plastic tank is acceptable, I know the fuel supply pipes need to be metal if you have a safety certificate. If you can take your fuel supply from your main boat fuel tank then you won’t have an issue with the type of tank and you will also have one less tank to worry about, that is assuming you have a Diesel engine?
The “Russian” connection confused me regarding the brand so I assume you just bought it from a Russian supplier?
 
Yes it was a russian supplier but dont know why it was over a grand cheaper ? Its going on my cruiser so has to be a seperate tank, iv bought a plastic one off ebay which in the description is suitable for both webasso (spelt wrong ?) And a eberspacher

Could it be counterfeit?

If you can return it under the distance selling regulations (assuming bought in UK). you could try a Chinese version for around £250 all up including the proper silencer and hull fitting. This thread is exhaustive!

I bought it off ebay from a russian supplier, buying a cheaper chinese version, are they the red ones ? Then id be in the same boat, so to speak, because the cheaper ones arnt marine grade either, catch 22, my question is, if it isnt marine grade, my eberspacher, , but i have it installed anyway, is it safe ??
 
What's the difference between a 'marine' grade and, eh..... 'non marine' grade Eber?

The unit's are going to be the exact same, presumably? Only difference being fittings etc...

Sounds like the fitter is bitter that he didn't make extra off you by selling you a unit? Go elsewhere, IMHO.
 
As far as I am aware, the only difference between a vehicle and marine heater is that the silencer is fully welded so no gases enter the boat plus a special hull fitting is required which is double skinned so your grp doesn't scorch.

Don't be fooled by how much the unit costs as that is no indication of its quality or durability. The 2 German manufacturers were in a price cartel until, I believe, Eberspacher dobbed Webaso into the EU competition chaps!

You could buy a Chinese version for as little as £120 which, in boating terms is a consumable item.....
 
Thanks everyone for your advice, not sure weather to put it back on ebay and cut my losses and buy a cheaper chinese version which i think i should have done in the first place

I think the whole Marine Grade thing is a con. Both Eberspacher and Webasto were fined 66 million Euro by the EU for a price fixing cartel and I think this extended to them insisting that only their units were fitted by certain installers. What can be marine grade about it if you think about it. If you can be bothered read the Good Value Boat Heaters thread on here you will read near the end about the cartel
 
suspect your official "fitter" has gone into a sulk after watching the previously closed warm air heater market get some exposure to competition.
Would most certainly not flog off heater, just find an independant installer not linked/tied to a Ebers/Webbo dealer ship and get them to install unit.
They are many around,they will probably be able to reassure of the quality of your heater and further make sure it is installed correctly and complies with local safety rules and regs .
This includes the BSC if its valid for your boat.

Thousands of self installed budget warm air heaters installed over past few years and no immediate outbreak of injuries or fires, bit suprising really.
