eberspacher from russia

Thanks everyone for your advice, not sure weather to put it back on ebay and cut my losses and buy a cheaper chinese version which i think i should have done in the first place

You are aware that the Chinese heaters haven't been tested to EU standards and I know that people here have stated that some of the components (IIRC exhausts) aren't fit for purpose. Furthermore, are you sure you will be able to find someone who will fit an Chinese import for you?

I think there's a difference between some of the guys on here who are practically minded (often with engineering backgrounds) and are using them to heat workshops and people like yourself who don't have that experience and are using them to heat boats, which could be potentially fatal.

As others have said there is no such thing as a marine heater but on the other hand you can upgrade various fittings to make it more suitable for marine use.I have just fitted a Chinese heater which I am well pleased with just using the standard parts.

Thanks again for all your advice and aswell as studying a zillion sites n pages i think the parts that need replacing or adding are a ss exhaust double skin fitting, a new exhaust, anything else i should consider replacing ? Iv been in touch with the supplier in russia and they wont accept a return, they state it is marine grade so im going to replace or add the more suitable parts and go with it

If there’s a future 3 rd party claim against the owner that revolves around the heater and in a courtroom it’s unearthed as Pete M describes above it would interesting to hear the outcome.

Does the forum think there’s any merit in sounding out your insurance/ advise them , they use the wording “disclosure “?

Or it it a case of fit and forget hope for the best and sort it out if it happens later , fingers crossed ?

There’s a lot of personal injury lawyers advertising on bus shelters, tube stations and hospitals in the U.K. Just an observation.

There is a vast amount of scaremongering that goes on regarding these heaters. Safety is vitally important but I am afraid the existence of certain paperwork does not ensure that anything is safe.

I would advise that you read the large thread on here and also there is a facebook group that is helpful and take a balanced view yourself. I would also advise that any of these units should not be used when unattended and I would never leave mine on through the night.

This subject is rather like Brexit, many on one side and many on the other. People will never agree and neither side is right...…..

That question has already been asked of an insurance company here:- http://www.motorboatowner.co.uk/ You need to subscribe in order to view the magazine (which is very good by the way).

I can't post the article as it's copyright but it gives no cause for concern...

Going to guess there is not a boat in the UK or the "Med" that does not have item aboard which has undergone a less than vigorous testing regime and has quietly been foisted on the market with a bad photocopy of CE certification the box.
Starts with droppers and chargers thru to bilge pumps and some knock offs of Raymarine bits and pieces.
Find something that folks want but reluctant to pay top dollar for, send item out to China, get it cheaply copied, get some nice boxes printed while you are at it.
Ship it back all back home, put stuff in boxes with photocopies of compliance, flog the lot and hope that nobody bothers to actually check anything.
A few worrying months until you have sold everthing and if no comeback do it again.

If it is a genuine Eber then you have scored a win at that price. It will need a marine exhaust as the odds of the vehicle one being 316 stainless are low. The heater itself is almost certainly identical. - and even if not its function is to take hot air in and discharge hot air out. It won't get wet ( I would hope). Do bet in mind they probably come in 12v and 24v so make sure your boat and it are the same.

Yeah its a d2 12v and i would hope its a genuine model but straight from eberspacher would be an extra grand so does i suppose seem too good to be true, iv ordered my new airtight exhaust n exhaust hull fitting now im hoping its good to go, just need a decent mechanic now to install it, thanks everyone for you input

The reason it would have cost £1500-£1600 is because they set up and maintained a price fixing cartel for 10 years before the EU took them to court and fined them 68 million Euro

Incase you were not aware

EU imposes 68 mln euro fine for parking heater cartel

BRUSSELS, June 17 (Reuters) - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had imposed a fine of 68 million euros ($76.6 million) on Germany’s Eberspaecher Group after finding it and another automotive parts company had fixed prices of heating systems in cars and trucks.
The Commission said Eberspaecher and Webasto had coordinated prices of fuel-operated parking heaters for parked vehicles and auxiliary heaters for 10 years from 2001.
“For over 10 years, the only two suppliers of parking heaters in Europe colluded to avoid competing with each other. This cosy arrangement adversely affected a major part of the European automotive industry and ultimately those who buy cars and trucks,” European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.

The Commission said that when the companies received requests for price quotations from car or truck manufacturers, they discussed various price elements, agreed which of the two would submit the winning lower bid, and exchanged other commercially sensitive information.
“The two companies also colluded when selling to dealers in Germany and Austria, for example by harmonising their annual price lists and the discounts they would give to these dealers,” it continued.
Webasto avoided a potential fine of 222 million euros because it revealed the existence of the cartel. Eberspaecher benefited from reductions due to its cooperation with the investigation and its agreement to settle with the Commission.
