I know there are a few Eberspacher experts floating about on here so I was wondering if you bought a 24v model, would it be a lot of work to change it to 12v, more than worth the hassle or is it fairly straightforward? I suspect I know the answer to this but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised!

Does anyone have a 24v model running from a 12v source with some sort of voltage changer or similar?

I am not an Eberspacher expert but I had one (ex GPO van) on a 30ft yacht. I only want to fit kit that is going to work with no problems. I think it will be cheaper to buy a 12 volt model than to buy and convert a 24 volt one. If I had a 24 volt one I might be tempted to fit a second alternator running 24 volts and put 2 batteries in series.

'expert' here !! You can run a D4 or D2 from a dc converter costing around £70.
There is a small amount of extra battery use due to the converter.
It can be cheaper to buy a 24v model and a converter.
Older models had very high start up requirements and need bigger and more expensive converters.

That's the sort of thing I was hoping to hear!

How "new" do you have to get to not have the "old" high start up requirements? Certainly the pricing of units is such that the 24v units seem to be a lot cheaper, and apparently quite abundant at the moment!

Ablemail electronics do a range of converters and seem well priced. I have sold several 24v heaters with their converters as an optional extra.
If you look up the eberspacher model you are interested in/ find out the power requirement (www.espar.com) you can do a cost comparison. As long as the converter meets the start up power requirements ( plus a margin) then it will run happily after start up.
My favourite used ebers ( price and reliability) are the D1LC compact or D3LC compact or if you want newer then the D2 or D4 made after 2009 ( with the tape wrapped ECU wiring tail)
No economic value whatsoever in actually converting a 24 to 12 (IMHO) new moter new pump and ( most importantly ) new ECU !!
Good luck
