It looks a bit (a lot) of a faff to get to, and remove all the drain points as per the manual.
Is there a shortcut? Was wondering if I could just connect a hose to the vent on the turbo and backflush it through the header tank?

Take note of what's in the book and do it properly, you will find both the heat exchanger and oil cooler be very sludgy when it comes out, you might even have to prod the drain point to get water out, fill it with fresh water run up the engine to temp and drain again, you will need to do this a few times until the orange brown water exiting changes to clear , then fill with Volvo mixed coolant, do not go to the truck shop and buy blue coolant and mix it with tap water, Volvo coolant has de ironised water in that's designed to save your engine and coolers.

Thanks Paul. So it's just a case of open up all the drain points, run fresh through from the header tank and poke the drain points when they get blocked, close drain points, fill with fresh, run up, rinse and repeat, fill with Volvo coolant.

Is it worth adding a coolant flush such as wynns. It says it hold contaminants in suspension.

I take it the Volvo coolant is pre mixed or do I need to buy de ionised water to mix.

It's pre mixed, would use flush myself just keep flushing with tap water, it's free!!

Good point!

I was talking to someone today who recommended prestone coolant. Apparently it can be used in anything with anything. I love it when they say guaranteed. How would you make a claim for any future issues stick I wonder! I find antifreeze a confusing subject. OAT, HOAT, no silicate etc... Is the Volvo stuff special. Are there special considerations particular to Volvo penta or could I source Volvo truck antifreeze? My engines are coming up 30 yrs old so does it all need to be a complex coolant.
