East Coast question

As you're looking for a swinging mooring I'd consider the Deben - the Orwell moorings can be exposed both to weather and passing ships which have been known to take out a row of trots near Woolverstone...

Both Felixstowe Ferry and Waldringfield yards may have moorings at reasonable prices though length is limited to around 11m in some areas.

I've sailed from the Deben for years and not found the Bar to be a major obstacle unless the weather is really rough & wind onshore. Upside is the most beautiful river on the E Coast (IMHO), good pubs, clean(ish) landing and no shipping.

Dont come to Burnham, its terrible. Stay away.

Except.
If its blowing old boots, you can still sail upriver and find a sheltered anchorage or a marina from most winds, or go up the Roach.

If its nice, there are 27 pubs within 1 days sail. I will leave you to work out how.
If you want a swinger, join RCYC. With the Family membership and 35 foot, my whole package comes to 1400 quid inc winter storage and a water taxi. There is room for a dinghy on the sea wall. And free parking, with Mailspeed 50 yards away.

Rice and Coles, similar amount of money without the Club bar, with the patrons very happy to take the mick whether they know you or not. Good bunch.
Priors charge by the week, about the same.

For entertainment, go out through Havengore to the Swale Riviera.

No, dont come to Burnham, too many pubs, restaurants local supermarkets. Sometimes, we dont go anywhere, because we are not hairy mile munchers, although we have managed 3000 odd miles in the last 3 seasons.

Saw a foot off the keel and set the Depth gadget to something improbable. You can tack within 1 boat length of the sea wall nearly anywhere. The problem is finding out what nearly anywhere means.

Racing? Yep they got that too.

Horrible place.

My mistake /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You could do far worse than considerTitchmarsh marina at Walton, charges still reasonable, sheltered and not too bad to get to the open water at virtually any state of the tide, good parking, and fairly good road access.

After an upbringing on the West of Scotland I find all East coast sailing a bit challenging (bottom too near the top). I'm Woolverstoned and happy, but empoverished thereby. Few of these manky Easy coast rivers give all tide and all weather access, and my preference for being within a few miles of the sea at low tide wins out. Sailing through farmland is not my choice. Tide running through the pontoons has cost me one crunch, but if your are out in the river on a swinging mooring that's not your problem. Pin Mill is bonny, and I had a swinging mooring there for two years. The hard is hard but not endless, the mud is sticky, the pub is your reward.

Pin Mill Sailing Club is a fount of knowledge for young and old. Don't miss out on the advice of its sailors of advancing geezerhood - collectively they've done everything there is to do on the east coast.

However, it sounds like you maybe have large lumps of time to sail (lucky b*st**d). I have this problem with a *job* which interferes with sailing - I'd never have accepted it if I'd known. For me, sadly, getting going in half an hour and clearing up in the same is important - and I long for the day that it's not!

The Mudway is a secret that we're all trying to keep quite about. You can find moorings reasonably cheaply, there are loads of local safe anchorages for a night out on the boat i.e. you can anchor up in a bird sanctuary ~ just you and the birds! Ramsgate & Brightlingsea are only a tide away. If you put your mind to it St. Catherine's dock in the centre of London is only a tide away as well.

So psst please keep stumm and go find a bouncy mooring on the real "East Coast", which most people seem to think is from Sar'fend to the Wash.

Peter.

No no no /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
There's nothing from The Wash all the way down to Sarfend /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
It's all dragons and other sea monsters round here with moorings costing umpteen trillion pounds and no chance of a smiling face at any marina or dock

On of your prime considerations is where a berth/mooring is available. You should make this your first question. There are waiting lists at many places. Some of the lists for moorings on the Deben have been closed & Levington(Suffolk Yacht Harbour) has a 4/5 year wait depending on who you talk to.The Tidemill at Woodbridge sometimes has avilability but they are likely not to know until after renewal time on 1st April.

I'd recommend Titchmarsh. Cheaper than all the orwell marinas as far as I'm aware.

Waiting list at SYC

They do have some moorings as well

Excellent sheltered sailing in the Backwaters when its blowing hard.

Nice freindly people

convenient stores on the way in Thorpe le Soken and Kirby le Soken.

Access only restricted at low water springs if you draw 2M.

I would agree that this may be the first consideration.
MDL has a waiting list for marina berths, altho probably not for swinging. Their swinging moorings are very expensive though, but they do give good service as mentioned above.

King's at Pin Mill have some moorings, but again availability may be limited depending on size/draft.

The other Pin Mill yard, Webb's, also have some, but I would be a bit chary about the quality of maintenance, their moorings go walkies from time to time!

If you want a swing mooring you can`t do better than West Mersea, great sailing area in the Blackwater, first class yacht club and a great sailing club, very good launch service, two great seafood eateries, one of them rustic beond belief.

Don't tell everyone they'll all want to come!!! Really it's more expensive than the south coast, the natives are very unfriendly and you can only get to and from the island an hour either side of low water on big springs... The restaurants give you food poisoning, the disco will deafen from 15 miles away, and the mobo's playing tag around the moorings are unbelievable!!!

You're not trying. How about...

If you want a swing mooring you can`t do better than West Mersea (yes you can)
great sailing area in the Blackwater (full of mudbanks, the wind blows up and down it)
first class yacht club (doubles as an old people's home)
great sailing club (full of posh gits from London)
very good launch service (when it's running)
two great seafood eateries (you have to queue)
one of them rustic beond belief (waitresses need a scrub)
the natives are very unfriendly (yes we are)
and you can only get to and from the island an hour either side of low water on big springs... (neaps, actually)
The restaurants give you food poisoning (once you get in)
the disco will deafen from 15 miles away (bon jovi, owing to the age of the in-crowd)
the mobo's playing tag around the moorings (smell of fish)

any good?
