I live in the middle of the country and am costing out the purchase and running costs of a 26ft cruiser as a first boat. My preferred cruising areas are North Wales and the Essex and Suffolk coast, but North Wales seems likely to win on cost grounds. Can anyone on the list who sails in either area provide sample mooring costs, either marina or swinging/trot for the purposes of comparison?

Thanks in advance. Mudhook.

I have a 26ft boat on trots at Pwllheli, about £400, will dry on springs,

Porthmadog about same cost'ish can remain afloat on river but tied to tide to cross bar.

Pwllheli harbour master has no problem with me moving to center trots or pile moorings night before to be able to go out in morning if tide times unsociable say. Pile moorings are available always afloat but more expensive for me as I have a catamaran and cannot share.

Aberdovey was £140 ground rent and £80 pa for mooring being lifted and laid at beginning and end of each season.
This for a 10m boat.
Attempts to leave moorings down invariably resulted in the whole lote being sucked into the sand during the winter.

If you go to the www.abersoch.co.uk site there are links to pwllheli marina giving current prices, BUT my local friends are saying there is a 3-4 year waiting list. There is an influx of people who used to go to windermere, so anywhere on the Llyn is difficult.
I've been spending most w/e there for 30 ish years despite a 4 1/2 drive from the midlands, so can't reccomend it enough.

If you are looking for a marina berth in North Wales you will probably have a long wait. You could go to the East coast first, and move to North Wales when a place becomes available. A new marina is being built at Beaumaris which will be taking boats in 2005. This will have 24 hour tidal access and better road access than Pwllheli, Abersoch, Portmadog, Aberystwyth etc. Great scenery as well. The cost there is not fixed yet, but will probably be about £220 per metre including VAT. They are taking names now for people who want to get in when they open for business.

You need to compare like with like. There are moorings available in many parts of North Wales but some will dry at various states of the tide, some will be quite a distance from the sea, some will be quite exposed (these tend to be cheaper). Others will be in deep water, sheltered and always available (these tend to be more expensive). Still others will have all the good points but it will take you a further hour to drive there (eg Holyhead).

Another point is to decide what sort of sailing you want. Around Anglesey you will experience strong tides, large tidal range, rocky anchorages, perhaps more extreme weather and fabulous scenery. In Cardigan Bay the tides are weak, weather perhaps better, lots of sandy beaches, scenery less dramatic.

There's also the question of your sailing pattern - plenty of destination options around Anglesey, almost whatever the weather, or somewhat limited in Cardigan Bay, where there are virtually no safe destinations in south-westerlies. For weekend sailing the latter can be very frustrating, whereas if time is no object it doesn't matter.

Thanks for all the info so far; please keep it coming. Mtb's £2.00 looks either very interesting or a misprint. Can you say where it is, even if it is £200 or (as I suspect) £2,000?

Just a thought, but have you actually bought your boat yet? If not and you have your heart set on N Wales it is definitely worth buying from a loacal dealer as they usually (but not always) have more sway with the powers that be at marinas and can greatly improve your chances of gettign a berth.

Incidentally Pwllheli marina, whilst having a long waiting list, does not have extortionate berthing costs. They are well below those on the South Coast and !/4 to 1/3 those of Mallorca.

My family have had a berth at Pwllheli since it opened and are now on our 4th boat there. I have a great time up there and the 4 hr plus drive from London is often well worth it. (the rest of my family go from Manchester)

next to my boat at fosdyke , in the corner of the wash so to speak .
but not a misprint apart from repairing and making good empty discarded moorings . It's a shame for danbrit to sit there all alone , mind you this summer should see my mates boat in and moored there.
My mate payed an old lady £270 for her old disused and falling in mooring !!! I did give him some stick cos the land belongs to the Environment agency so it's a case of some toe rag ripping him off before he was in the know.

tell you what there's a bungalow for sale right there, acre of land directly across the track from the slipway . they want 79950.00 for it !!

ps
When I said 2.00 that's two pounds re registration fee nout else.

Wells is a better place in the sense of great, harbour, security due to plenty of people about, helpful intelligent professional harbour master and team .
cheers
mick

I realise that, but if you chat to the harbour master trot or pile moorings are available, the harbour master is not connected to the marina. It is a good sheltered anchorage, but not as pretty as Porthmadog. I had to move as my insurance insisted on lift out for winter at Porthmadog.

The request I assumed was for moorings rather than a marina berth.

I think he wanted to know about both, so you can tell him all about the trot thingies and I can about the marina...hey presto a perfect, complete answer!

On that note, I had never realised that the harbourmaster controlled the trot and pile moorings, but it it does make sense if you think about it (which I never had before).

My only real experience of Pwllheli H/M is being deafened by his world record holding loudspeaker as he gives a rollocking to jet skis and small speedboats who come into the harbour at full pelt, making the trot thingies and sometimes the entire marina bob up and down on their wash.

...and every speed infringer gets a piece of his loudspeaker, whoever they are. I saw him give one of his loud verbal warnings to the Babbalas team, sailors of that large IC45 thing during the one ton cup there in 2001.

There are half tide and full tide moorings available on the River Roach - just off the River Crouch - south Essex for £200 pa upwards

I have a 40 foot steel ketch on a full tide mooring - does not dry out and it is costs £260 Pa + a small charge to the boat yard to store a dingy.

It may be too far south for you

Good luck

To add to the East Coast part of this thread (sadly neglegted to date). Have a friend with 30ft yot on Walton backwaters and believe she pays somewhere around about £360 for all tide swinging mooring. Marinas are around the £220-240 per metre mark. Suffolk Yot Hbr @ Levington has a waiting list I know but dunno about the others. Ipswich Haven, Woolverstone & Shotley would be easy access from A14 Midlands. Crouch & Blackwater easier access via M25 so depends where in Mids you are.

About the only Marina in Wales that might have space is Port Dinorwic on 01248 671500 - this would be against a wall in the tidal dock (behind lock gates) about £1600 or so pa for a 26fter

Cardigan bay fustrating for weekend sailing!!!!!!!
Within a four hour sail I have 5 harbours plus about 4 different anchorages!
Back to the question though,a mooring in Barmouth Harbour costs around £240 but you need to purchase your own tackle.

I was in the office when Ken did that once, it took a while for me to get back up off the floor from laughing at the ski boat skipper who nearly jumped over board when he got an ear bashing. It really does the trick when people do not realise that 12 kts through the moorings is pushing it a bit.

A really nice fellow who seems to love what he does and enjoys nothing more than chatting about boats and the town.

I am surprised how many people on here are in Pwllheli, I think my first summer season here is going to be fun and hopefully I will make a few good sailing/drinking friends.

1830 and still light, sun out and nearly beach exploring time again.
