I just tried to register with ebay to bid on something advertised in the for sale under £200 forum.

Its asked me for credit card details to confirm my identity. Is this normal ?

IIRC I logged a (debit) card with them when I first registered. This was for them to collect fees for any sales made by me.
Given the amount of fraud going on on Ebay then some form of ID makes sense.

Just clipped this from their help area:

Note: If you register with an "anonymous" email address, such as Yahoo or Hotmail, you'll need to place a valid credit card number on file to verify your identity. Your card will not be charged.
