New boats will be issued with a new MMSI number,
If A second hand boat the MMSI number [if it has one] stays with the boat, you should be able to go into the set and find its MMSI number.

We Have just gone through the same process.
When we bought our boat S/Hand it had a DSC VHF fitted but we could not find the MMSI no, I contacted the Radio licensing centre and the said 'don't worry just fill in a new application and we will issue a new MMSI No'.
I applied on-line at www.radiolicencecentre.co.uk filled in the forms and 8 days later have the new radio Licence with DSC VHF, VHF Portable and Radar and a new MMSI No.
All in all Very efficient.

Ian , the boat if it has a DSC enabled radio will have a call sign and (should) an MMSI number. Both stay with the boat for its life. If you have the exsiting call sign and boat name visit ofcom with licenses being issued via The Radio Licensing Centre, The Post Office, PO Box 885, Bristol BS99 5LG.
To recap - the Ship Radio Licence stays with the vessel through changes of name and ownership. I am assuming here that the boat you've bought is not new. If it is then you apply to the same address, you will be issued with a call sign and MMSI number which you can enter using the instructions from the handbook!

We checked our boat and found a call sign but no MMSI, the radio licence that came with the boat only had a call sign, we also found the radio had never been programed with a MMSI.
That could be why we have a new MMSI.
Not entered the new MMSI yet , is it difficult? I seem to remeber you only get 1 go at getting the No right

What! I have only:
a) Knocked an entire wheel off and bent the suspension of my car.
b) Blown up an Autopilot Course Computer
c) Took 2 weeks to fit a wind instrument
d) Taken 6 weeks to fit a new VHF
e) Cut out a monster hole in the side of the flybridge only to find that there was a solid former behind it. I now have a Semi-Circular circle!
I better stop here....

Maritime Mobile Service Identity is a unique idetity for the boat. IT does not change unless radio goes to different boat.

Correction:
The licence must be re-applied for in the name of the new owner BUT the callsign and MMSI number remain with the vessel.

Unfortunately this is NOT what should have happened!!
The RLC should have searched for the existing MMSI number AND callsign, based on the information that you gave during the application process.
Would you please send me a PM with your details as I will now need to find out what went wrong.
