Drumbeat & the bare truth about the crew trying to escape

Yes I think she is a stunning looking boat, I prefer her to the newer shapes.

I have changed because I want a more long distance boat with a more comfortable ride than any planing boat can offer. I also want more space. In addition I need a boat that can dry out so that I can visit many more harbours... there are just a few reasons.
Long distance stuff is going to involve 10/11 knot cruising and the SD hull is better at that than a planing boat whilst not as good as a D hull. The new boat will still do 25 knots at a price and at 18 knots offers about the same economy as Drumbeat.

Drumbeat managed to do 26 knots in an f8 and without slamming – I could never hope to achieve that with the new boat – but I reckon I cannot make tea safely underway on any planing boat when I think I could manage it on a trader with stabilisers in an f5 – that a controversial subject around here – the tea rating of a boat is the maximum force of wind that you can safely make tea in …. I wills establish the rating on the return trip in the new boat but I think its f5T.

I agree that Traders do not look as sexy etc but I do not do boating for that. I looked at Drumbeat in Emsworth and she stood out and looked a stunner … agreed. Wherever I take Drumbeat she turns heads and invokes many questions - it has its glamour side. A part of me is sorry to see her go. Traders have another type of beauty based on a more utility approach and are far better boats to live aboard on trips. My new Trader is the highest spec one they have ever built and having a Flag Blue hull she should stand out a bit.

Yes, I put Drumbeat into her berth - she has powerful bow and stern thrusters. As you see Trader did not leave a lot of room for it, I had about 12 inches gap on either side between two boats at one point but she is really easy to handle with those thrusters.

I never feel guilty about thrusters – boats are not good at handling in close quarter marina messed up situations – ships use thrusters and tugs … anyway I have managed to get out of many ridiculous situations by having two thrusters and it makes the load very light on my crew.

I am waiting on waterproof camera shots to publish part 2 of this saga ... I hope they turn out OK. I will also post a short video of the following waves cutting off the horizon behind Drumbeat.... this will take a little time.

One of the crew did flip a little bit and he is a forum member to boot ..... after arriving in one harbour after a rough trip he tried to escape from us down a long fender sock he had bought but we caught him and brought him back to the boat...

I am not going to name this member of the crew , I will leave it to others to guess who it is

Re: Drumbeat\'s Last Trip - warning many images

Excellent report, gludy. Can't wait for the next installment. Be honest now. Have you got any regrets about selling Drumbeat after that trip?

Re: Drumbeat & the bare truth about the crew trying to escape

would that be miniskipper hiding in the fendersock?

glad the delivery was enjoyable - even if weather not ideal ; excellent photo's.

Any update on the shrink wrapped package arrival?

Re: Drumbeat & the bare truth about the crew trying to escape

Nope ... not miniskipper - she was with us and our star crew member but you are getting close as the escapee is related to her ....

I think he was upset because what we actually said to him was 'put a sock in it' - we did not say 'put it in the sock'.

I think the sea trails took place last weekend, I am waiting to hear when the shrink wrapped parcel will be shipped .. its any day now. The last one took 23 days to get here.

I now intend to boat from Emsworth for a few months so that all the bugs can be sorted out on the spot.

Re: Drumbeat\'s Last Trip - warning many images

Regrets .. yes, I have some.

Drumbeat behaved so well in those seas but I really do crave for the functionality of the Trader ... so I have mini mood swings.

Here is a shot of a following wave shot from the saloon. This was when we had waves of about 12 foot following us, picking us up and then planing … they got much bigger. In this shot you are not looking at the horizon you are looking at the wave top.

When I looked back on drumbeat at Emsworth ..... I had some regrets ... yes. This was my last shot with her:-

[/ QUOTE ] I knew it, honest guv! Went on the Malcolm Miller, years ago. The STA is a great organisation.

Still reckon it's worth a large Bushmills /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Drumbeat\'s Last Trip - warning many images

Hmmm no one has seemed to guess who the sock man is yet. I am disappointed that one of you thought it was me.... ill remind you that its a immediate member of my family!
I’ve had the water cam pics developed but ill have to scan them in so it could take some time.
I don’t know if my Dad has sent you the other pics yet from my cam and my Mums, but i will prob send them anyway!

Re: Drumbeat\'s Last Trip - warning many images

yes... part 2 of this thread is waiting on all those pics.

The forum members have no idea how delicate you are and how far removed that terrible person trying to escape into that sock!

Shall I post a picture of you miniskipper? just to show how unfair that was?

How do you feel the Trader would have behaved in comparison?

Re: Drumbeat\'s Last Trip - warning many images

Well for a start there is no way the trader could have managed the 26 knots cruising speed in thos conditions - that would be its top speed.

I would expect a smoother ride but with more water over the top - as it happens we were all drenched anyway, it was not possible to be any wetter than we were!

I do not know how the following sea would have effected it ...... I do not know how the stablisers would perform in f8 conditions like that - I really do not know.

I do have to say i was pleased with the way Drumbeat handled it.
