Re: Cruising plans

Adaero, I found this in this years ARC instructions, it may be of some help to you.

Non-VAT Paid EU Flagged Yachts
EU fl agged yachts which do not have VAT paid status
are liable for tax when they arrive in the EU. It is worth
noting that the tax can be paid in any member state,
and the tax status is then valid throughout the EU.
The Azores and Madeira have a benefi cial tax status
within the EU, and are able to levy VAT at only 15%.
A taxable valuation on the current value of a yacht
[i.e. its second hand value] can be made with the tax
authorities in Ponta Delgada, and tax paid at the 15%
rate. Horta based Mid Atlantic Yacht Services are able
to act as an agent for VAT valuations. Any owners
wishing to take advantage of this route are advised to
contact Mid Atlantic Yacht Services directly. See Horta
local information page for contact details.

Re: Cruising plans

Have you considered paying VAT in Spain? OK the rate is 16%, but i've heard they value the boat at about 75% of its market value, so the equivalent of 12% VAT?
