Some one asked me this morning whilst talking about boats. "do you sail, drive or what, a boat" I tried to sound knowledgable by replying that "it depends what sort of boat" Truth of the matter is that I dont really know either, but I suspect that I am kinda correct.
Answers on a postcard, or just post it here if you prefer. Oh and no there isnt a prize for the best answer !

I'm confused to. Maybe you skipper a power boat?? Then I suppose it depends weather you've got a motor yacht or a speed boat, which of course you can drive. But not a ship, which you helm or captain.

I thought you helmed a boat or ship, hence helmsman/lady.

But can you go for a sail in a sailing boat when it's motoring? I think not. So for anything under power, I think you must be helming or steering

Sailing is more of a recreational usage, I reckon. I doubt you would go for a sail in a tall ship?

Nah. You can only steer a boat or navigate. Driving hardly comes into it. Less it's a speed boat or you may drive a cruiser though rough waves. Dont think you can drive it on auto pilot though!!

None of that was any B****Y use you know. I am still confused. I need a categorical answer relating specifically to sporst cruisers.

my two pence is that a skipper or helmsman pilot the boat when its power, my thinking is that skipper and helmsmen are the nouns and pilot the verb.
the helm being the adjective describing where the noun may stand or sit to carry out aforementioned verb. -smiley face-

please also bear in mind when looking at my response that i know very little. on that light test posted a few weeks ago i only scored 5 out of ten and that on one question where i thought i was letting past a small pleasure craft was in fact heading directly towards a stationary fishing vessel over 50 metres, hence i only pilot.. or is it drive? my boat during daylight hours and in fair weather!

No i have been thinking and another possible way might be.

you pilot a vessel, helm a ship and skipper a craft, so really perhaps you decide what catagory your boat falls into and choose from one of them.

my catagory of the above would be, semi displacement or discplacement under 100 foot sort of length would be a vessel, a ship would be anything over 100 feet or so and craft would be most planning boats that dont fall into the aforementioned catagories.

thus my humble guess would be skipper being the correct terminology for a sportscruiser

and defiantly again i add -smiley face-
