I'd like to make up a "dressing line" to which I can easily attach my signal flags to for dressing my mobo overall. Does anyone have suggestions on how I could go about this exactly?

My flags are the type with a wooden toggle at one end and a bit of lace at the other. Form a loop somehow for each toggle or splice something in to attach? And what to attach the lace to?

I want to work out spacings etc then have the position of each flag fixed so I don't have to work it out every time.

Any advice welcome!

The usual thing is to have a loop in the end of each lanyard or "lace", and just button the flags together directly without any other line. Obviously this relies on the size of the flags being right to fill the space you want to fill.

If you do want to attach them along a line, I think I would tie a slipped overhand knot (you probably know it if not by that name - the simplest kind of "slipknot" you can tie in the middle of a line) for each toggle, and rolling-hitch each lanyard to the line a bit further down.

A far better system is to detach all the flags, and then get a ribbon/ tape the correct length stern to masthead to bow. Then multi ply the hoist of the flags by the number and subtract form the tape length, gives you the correct distance you have to share out between the flags, Then sew them on again. I used a sewing machine!

Thanks for the tips, I cant imagine stringing these flags together in a long line, they're not the most expensive, I'm sure they would self destruct.
I guess it all depends on how they measure out over the available length but I was picturing some fairly fine cord tied in a loop but passed through the strands of the main line to keep it in position. Possibly the same sort of thing for tying the bottom of each flag as well.
I just wondered if it's a common thing to do and if a standard way of doing it had established itself but I guess not.

Isn't there a standard order to attach them - to avoid accidentally spelling anything rude?
You could have fun with that idea...
