Dreaded volvo 290 issues

Mike, sorry to read of your troubles. I also have a mid 90's Targa 30/33 on 290 outdrives. I am planning to send the port drive off shortly to be refurbished and would appreciate knowing who to avoid!?

Not sure about anyone too avoid really . I have spoke too the company I bought the boat from today and they were brilliant. Even though it's out of warranty I was quickly made too feel that I was there most important customer even though I'm obviously not and let's get it sorted attitude and I can't ask for more than that. I think I have seen some of your YouTube videos are you moored in Portishead ?

Whereas I understand your concern for the seller, they have sold you this boat in the pursuit of their trade and hence profit, and you have apparently suffered issues ever since you bought the boat.

Unless they are going to fit a new outdrive, which seems unlikely, I feel you need to be prepared to make it clear you are dissatisfied with the boat due to its defects and having given them every opportunity to undertake a successful repair, they have not been able to do this and therefore the only acceptable resolve is that they provide you a refund, perhaps with a small offset for the use of the boat you have had, although arguably the hassle more than knocks out any beneficial use you may have enjoyed.

You need to bear in mind that if you wish to dispose of the boat this could become your millstone, not theirs. I suspect they are hoping you will simply go away, and perhaps this explains why they are being so nice.

One for JFM perhaps.

Suspect the man just wants a boat to go boating like now please .
Court route at this juncture could put backs up and bang goes quick amicable fix. ?
Mebbe just one more heave will get it sorted if somebody can be found and persuaded to do the job once and for all.
By the time any legal action has ground its way through the courts and buyer has got his money back, this this season will have long gone and possibly the next one as well, especially as the vendor appears to be doing all he can to resolve the situation with goodwill on both sides.
He has then got to start all over again.

I agree with r cc. Spoke to the vendors today and even though out of warranty could not be any more pleasant or we will sort this regardless of cost. Apart from this issue we love the boat it suits us perfectly. So no legal action would even be considered. I would buy a new drive myself if it came too it. The problem is they are not drive specialists and rely on outside contractors. If they were uncaring or had a bad attitude maybe but I can't fault them . They are out of pocket too and I feel there frustration too. I was assured today it would be sorted regardless of cost and you can't ask for more.

It sounds quite a sensible approach to me, no need for getting nasty or lawyers involved when the seller is making a good effort to sort the issues, anything is fixable and just needs the right person on the case, good luck

Yes that's right moored in Portishead.
It's good to read that the boat seller is looking after you and at the same time which outdrive specialists are not fixing the problem. My interest is not to name and shame them only to try and decide who to use going forward. The Port 290 drive I want to get refurbished appears to be the original and last season was the first time it started showing signs of its 23 year age in 7 years of ownership which is impressive in my opinion.
Hope you get the drive fixed shortly and that you will keep doing progress updates.
