DP-E oil

i seem to remember some one on here has used engine oil in the leg ??

any experience, or just my poor memory ....

The required oil is GL5 75w90 fully synthetic. I wouldn't use anything else, although I would be happy to buy non volvo branded equivalent. Others will tell you only to buy Volvo oil. Either way, get the right spec.

Some older Volvo legs used engine oil, but I think you have to go right back to the 270/280 era for that.

tnx, and would you just drain the old and refill or rinse the old out with what ?

Drain and refill, unless you find a problem such as water in the oil. Then fix the leak, maybe flush through and refill. In that case I would flush with something a bit cheaper, maybe semi-synthetic 75w90.

Just did mine a couple of weeks ago, purchased from Keypart GL5 75W/90 Gear Oil Genuine 5 litre - £90.64 + 1 litre bottle - £20.02, just drained and filled.

2.7 Ltrs is the correct amount. I know the cos I have two of them and can't just buy a single 5 litre container each year. :ambivalence:

Volvo Penta wanted £20 per litre for their oil . That seems lot . You can get whisky less than that .
I went for an alternative oil and used some to flush out a little.

By the way - Do get the Volvo penta 'o' ring and fibre washer set for the dipstick/drain plug and filler plug.

Forget brands and corporate image as these are the quickest way to part a fool and his/her money; simply look at the specifications in detail and buy oil of the same specifications.

Very few people realise that there are only a few oil manufacturers/processers and a whole lot of branded and non branded retailers of oil which means a few are producing for a lot, in many cases some very well known names buy in from the cheaper producers/refiners and simply put it in their own packaging and give it a 500% mark up for nothing more than a container, and a container we never use after it is empty.
