Don't subscribe to Practical Boat Owner and save 100% this Christmas

...same stories..
Practical Boat Owner could be a great magazine, if they looked at its name before considering articles.

It should contain practical articles for boat owners (see, the clue is in the name): how to fix stuff, how to build stuff, how to do stuff, new stuff to make the boat better/safer.

It should not contain articles about: The Solent (done to death), new boats (we've got one, remember?), our cruise to Whogivesashit (who gives a ...).

Whilst I agree about the Solent I'm interested in new boats and other people's cruises; they both give my dreams a kick start on long motorway journeys.

I like the boat reviews and dont mind some cruise reports but why o why do they rattle on so much about the south coast. I also hate the articles about ports and the info, its usually south coast and its clap trap. But it is the best magazine of the many i buy sailing and other sports

Will they do the 'how to build the Den Ashton long-boat' article again? That first appeared in the '70's, must be due for a resurface by now:rolleyes:

While I've only read a couple of editions, I have much previous experience of other 'niche' magazines, and I reckon about 2 years (max) is about the time you start to see article recycling, sometimes sooner. I suspect the publishers rely on newcomers to the field to keep subscription numbers up from those deciding it's no longer worth the money - diehards excepted.

Content will be influenced by editorial control such that South coast matters are heavily weighted, for example. With New Scientist, it's quantum physics - for me a boon to insomnia; I just get up, start to read an article on quantum physics and go back to bed to sleep like a baby.

Still, better than reading about Jason and Cythia's break-up (I don't know who they are either) or is it Katie's and prince what's-his-name's pregnancy? Or have they broken up yet?

If you have better content to put in the mag why not write it down and sell it to them like Dylan does? Or failing that, suggest a topic to them and they will write it for you. The reason for the south coast weighting is simply that the vast majority of boating happens there, the magazine is based there, and the magazine's people are based there along with their boats. This month though, there's an article about the Isle of Man

bless you

bless you for putting my name close to the word better

in the past it appeared on my school reports with the immortal phrase

"could do better"

The problem with PBO is that the Editor is a woman. Sarah is a top Editor and no arguments about that; BUT, being a women she will never understand the importance and attraction of getting your hands dirty and mending something, or building something or maintaining something. The publishers are of a similar mindset and it's only the likes of the hands-on nuts like David that keep what little practical stuff there is, to be found within. Having said that the latest issue is practical-rich so not all bad.

:eek:splutters!

One could say that the main problem with sailing is all the sodding men who put off the women with their ridiculous old-fashioned and sexist claptrap. I honestly feel sorry for some of your wives - some of you must have picked right ninnies to marry.

Perhaps the thought of all that research and picture taking and writing and polishing for about £100 a page puts people off.

Rates have tumbled alarmingly
