Dongle in France

Hi there - I got a dongle from Orange on a monthly contract, but have transfered the SIM card into a Zoom dongle. It seems to work fine most of the time. In fact I'm using it now at the port in Langres - just arrived after three days climbing up from St Jean - all very quiet on the Champagne-Bourgogne, Downhill all the way to Paris now,

We have an Orange pay-as-you-go SIM card that we put into an unlocked dongle we bought from eBay in the UK. If you already have somewhere to put the SIM card (existing dongle, iPad, etc.) then the PAYG option is pretty decent. We paid €8 for the SIM card itself, then €20 for 2GB of data that lasts a calendar month. That means you get 2GB that expires after a month. If you use up the 2GB before the month ends, you can simply recharge with another 2GB of data by handing over another €20.
The recharges, which are the 2GB Let's Go jobbies can only be bought in Orange shops, unfortunately they don't advertise these on their website. (If you check their website, they have similar but nowhere near as good options.)

This is not correct.

You can buy PAYG "Lets Go" recharges from most tobacconists etc as well as "Orange" shops. Just look for the "Orange" logo in the shop door. I know, I do it all the time. You do however have to make a free phone call to activate the new recharge. However, its really simple.

I use an Orange Domino with a PAYG SIM for all my internet - at our holiday home in France and on the boat., As long as you can get a 3G signal then you have a good reliable internet connection. I am sending this message from my Orange Domino.

Orange contract 1gb per month 26€ includes their Domino MIFI unit and unlimited access to their WIFI network. Need french bank account though.

Not so with the PAYG (Sans commitment) Domino, you just need your passport.
I got my Domino, bought in France last year, unlocked and this year bought a Spanish Orange card for it, works a treat.

Easy, tiger. You may want to narrow down what wasn't correct.
It would appear you can buy the recharges in other shops, as well as Orange shops. Sadly, can't be done over the internet itself.

The rest of the information, as far as I'm aware, is correct, however.

Until April, the best value was orange PAYG Internet max option, it is now not open to new users.

Its 9euro a month for unlimited internet.

I may have a spare sim that was activated before April and so still has this available. Id need to double check its still active.

If of interest I guess I would want about 30 euro for the sim

What's an Orange Domino?

I bought an Orange Domino last year in France. Its a mobile router that can connect directly to a PC/tablet or will support 5 local devices by wireless. Has its own battery, and can in extremis be hoisted on a flag halyard to get a better signal. I got it unlocked, and have used it in the UK and in NZ with different sim cards.

Now my problem is that it is coming to the end of a month, and I cannot get it recharged in France. After many attempts with UK credit cards that go all the way on Orange's web site until the transaction has been validated, then it collapses with a 'technical error'. Orange have confirmed to me today that they can only deal with French credit cards! Typically French! It used to be that way with their fuel dispensers which seem to have been fixed now.

We're anchored off a delightful island (ile d'Arz) in the Morbihan, and don't want to go all the way up to Vannes just to get back on line! Does anyone have a solution? The 0800 224 224 top up line given by Orange appears only to work on a fixed telephone line, and does not work with 00 33 800 224 224. Or do the French have a different international prefix to everyone else as well?

You are right in saying that the Orange on-line top up is pants. It is even difficult to top up on-line using a French credit/debit card and I have given up, constantly getting the service unavailable message. However, you do not need to go to an "Orange" shop. Many newsagents/tobacconists etc will do you a top up - just look for an Orange sticker in the window. What you want to get is a "Lets Go" pass - costs about €20 for a month although that has a data download limit. I find it is quite enough for emails & basic web browsing etc.

Here is a summary of the process:

You receive a receipt printed with a 14-digit number which you have 6 months to activate.
-Once you have your receipt, call Orange/France Telecom at 0800 224 224.
-Enter your Domino SIM “phone number.”
-Press 2 for a Lets Go top-up.
-Enter the 14-digit number on the receipt and press #.

Never tried it but I am told that you can also do it over the phone as follows but you will probably need a French card:

Using your credit card, call France Telecom at 0800 224 224 and purchase your Mobicarte/Lets Go electronically.
-Enter your Domino SIM “phone number.”
-Press 1 for a credit card.
-Choose your recharge option
-Enter your credit card numbers and press #.
-Enter the 3-digit code (on the back of the credit card next to the signature) and press #.
-Enter MMYY of your card’s expiration date and press #.

Hope this helps & enjoy the Morbihan.

If you create a login on the website you can recharge the Let's Go PAYG Sim. I now use one for my boat Monitor system & they have a 6 month option for €35 that gives you 3GB over the 6 months. Good if you don't need much data. Works in any unlocked dongle.

You should have received a password by text when you first used the sim. This with the phone number (also received by text) will let you login to your useage & recharge options on the website

Orange have done something to their website and topping up on line is now very easy, quick and straightforward, so much easier than when I made the comment in #13 above.
