Dolphin 12hp engine

Friend has a seized engine, anyone any know where he might find another one on the south coast?

I know someone who used to collect Dolphin engines, I'll ask him and report back when I get a reply.

However this might be nature's way of giving your chum a different engine, one not quite such a strain on the sense of humour !

Is a gearbox required ?

Long long ago, I had the Dolphin Saildrive - a vertically mounted engine driving what looked like the lower end of an outboard.

Anyhow, one winter it seized and I was thinking the worst. So with the engine out of the boat and the cylinder head off I poured penetrating oil into each cylinder. After a couple of days I found a very large 'G' cramp and applied the end of the screw in the centre of the piston with the 'G" under the crankcase. To my surprise the thing moved and I was able to determine there were no scratches on the bore.

That engine went on for several years.

Never heard of a saildrive version, only the Seagull and Honda ones. Sure it was a Dolphin?

I have one in my boat and it's very reliable, quiet, strong and doesn't get used often but is always willing and able - did I mention it was reliable?

Not much help I know but I just wanted to try to give you confidence in this great wee engine.

I dimly remember the saildrive version.

I checked with my contact, he gave his Dolphin/s to the chap in Cornwall, this was some time ago.

Until you feel like astern gear and have to stop engine then start it the other way, very handy in marinas !

Yes I have seen a model with a gearbox, the controls looked remarkably lawnmower like to me...

Just takes a little getting used to but you can flip the direction lever over without stoping in neutral and it works a treat. Not to everybody's taste but it's a quirk that I've come to like on my boat...

Absolutely. Eventually donated to the guy in Bodmin.

As I mentioned, I remember the saildrive version; possibly with a shudder, but I remember it !

Had one of these for 12 years, still have it. The gearbox ones have no issue changing gears, but engine itself takes a bit of getting used to. They don't like to idle for very long so you have to keep blipping the throttle when coming into marinas at slow speed. But never has it let me down, always starts first turn. You can still buy the parts, they have a web site. Just google dolphin engines.
