Hi All,

I have bought a RIB with a Garmin VHF 100i on board. The antenna is missing from its base.

Does anyone recognise the brand / type as I’d like to buy a new antenna to screw onto the base..

Many thanks

Paul

Without knowing the reactance of the coil, you can't calculate the correct length of whip. Probably easier to buy a new one, else you'll have to get an over long whip and use a VNA or similar to tune it by cutting bits off until channel 16 is low SWR.

Not sure how that helps. Garmin don't seem to make a VHF antenna and the radio can take any tuned to the marine band.
Have you looked? It states clearly antenna for garmin 100i vhf....however you're the expert....

Yes, but according to the Garmin website that's any Marine band with 50 ohm co-ax. Garmin don't sell a specific antenna and without knowing the make and model of the broken one you can't easily specify a new whip.

It wouldn't make sense to have a single antenna for a marine VHF as sailing yachts typically need a lower gain antenna than a powerboat.

Hi there,

I’ve googled exactly “garmin vhf 100i antenna” but can’t seem to find a definitive result. Would you mind sharing the result link that you got? Cheers, Paul
I will have a look again but I just scrolled down and clicked on one.
However st599 in post #8 seems to give better advice suggesting its not a simple fix.

If you do amazon prime they are listed and you can check the specifications, send it back if it doesn't work.

Post 5 will get you there if you are practical and have a correct tools to create internal thread of right pitch etc etc
3dB gain as last post shows is best pattern for sailing boats because of heeling affect. Your rib won’t heel so much hopefully.
Even practical me would be looking at a second hand item if you cannot find the spare part off a shelf and a whole 2nd hand unit may work out cheaper.

I think this is what you want. https://www.jaycar.com.au/475mm-stainless-steel-vhf-marine-antenna/p/DC2070 Most antenna use the same thread type for attachment. I am guessing that is what you need. Now the big bulb at the base as mentioned may contain coils etc to provide for a phantom ground plane and possibly coils to make the antenna a 3/4 wavelength. I am sure that rod will work but as aid you would need to check with a VSWR meter to confirm correct matching. I have used those rods with a plain base with a metal ground plane (the bars of the arch) with reasonable matching. ol'will

A whole new antenna can be bought for a little over £40 : VHF Antennas - Masthead, Stub, RIB & Whip Antennas
Tiz what I referred to,but all this ham /compatibility/matching swr etc etc. (Good advice I agree but) ...
It's quite likely that had any old antenna been fitted the op wouldn't be asking...its because it's missing....not suggesting the op should waste his money, but a replacement antenna as you suggest is probably the cheapest way to go.
