Having had various oil seal leaks rectified, water leaks, new exhaust elbows, various other modifications and now injectors on my TAMD41s I was wondering whether this financial drain is ever going to stop?

Mind you I think its props next.....

Yours in poverty

It's Volvo engines innit?

They're designed for continuous "servicing."

I changed all our lorries from Volvo to Renault a good few years ago, for that very reason. We haven't looked back since.

Nick, it's one of the main reasons we got rid of the motor cruiser and went over to a sailing boat. I may be wrong, but it seemed to me the only engines to have were Cats - the ones I know of are REALLY reliable (that is unless anyone knows different......!)

jap engines take some beating, on the road or on the water, they just do not leak and are extremely hard wearing. Volvo live on a name developed in the 70's for safe family estate cars, the product is not that good, the ones they make that is (not badge)

I enjoy motor boats and sailing boats equally, and made a sailboat to own decision mainly for the same reason Mike gave - the cost of maintenance and fuel. Cats also have a very good name out here, and I have an overseas client with a lot of engines who won't go past Detroit/MTU, but in those cases my experience is with commercially rated engines.

I recently did a corporate recovery of a company that, among many other things, did design appraisals of commercial vessels to be built. Hardly ever saw a design come in with a Yanmar, and I do not know why. Alot of Volvo's though in the charter, game fishing type class of boat which is closest to what we are talking about.

I suspect that any pleasure rated (often called "performance" rated??) engine, expecially with a turbo, is destined to consume alot of replacement parts, service hours, fuel and heartache sooner or later in its life. However, with a commercially rated one you pay more up front and cart around quite a bit more weight. Even for our own little engine I tried to get a lowly rated non turbo one, it is a Volvo however, but a "Perkins" if you know what I mean, and weight is not such a problem in a displacement yacht.

It is a tough choice as to which way to go for us biboatal people - one of each would be nice!

How about the Jap diesel engine that was out of commission for nearly 3 months due to spares not being available.

C'mon Nick, you're starting to worry me now. I bought a boat with twin 41A's at the start of the season and am now asking myself what I have got myself into. Service history indicates that nothing other than routine items in 13 years (1100hours) of use. Injectors could now do with a fettling but service schedule indicates they should have been seen to at 800 hours anyway (and they weren't!)
So, chin up.........

Also depends on how engines been used. Volvo actually rate the TAMD41P for light commercial use (don't know about the 41A) - max of 2 hours full power in any 12hours, which reflects pleasure use. However, pleasure use does not always reflect the rating.

This view may be contrary to urban legend, but the often held view that diesel engines like to be worked hard (thrashed?) is not, in my opinion true (they do like being used though). If one looks at the commercial ratings of marine diesels, some diesels have multiple ratings and the general difference is that the version rated for heavier use is prevented from being worked as hard as the lighter rated one by power (fuel/air) being limited (rpm less, often much so, also as a consequence).

I am working with some new planing vessels at the moment which will each do the 1100 hours in Pherans post within the first 4 months of their life - each vessel has 4 off V8's to give over 2000 hp - those engines are being rated at 85% of the maximum continuous rating for maintenance and fuel economy reasons. That is a very conservative rating compared to pleasure.

The message may be in the above, if you have a pleasure rated diesel, don't push it hard, chances are it is being given a work out everytime you go for a ride in any event.

Better get my head down quick now!

Nick, sorry to hear about all your problems, I owned a Volvo engined boat some years ago and it seemed like every weekend I was buying parts for it, but I think the prvious owner had used her very little, so when we started using her a lot things just kept going wrong.
This is nothing to do with your post, but i was sitting in the marina on the flybridge yesterday (sunday) and noticed your mby chat flag, we are moored on the same pontoon, the new owners of Soma Haze, look forward to meeting you soon. If its any consolation from what Andy tells me, if anyone can sort your problems out, it will be Phil.

all the best Steve & Jill

Re: Spare a thought..

For some friends of mine whose Caterpillar V8 has just been pronounced scrap in the South of France.

Only 24000 euros to replace. Ouch !!

<hr width=100% size=1>We don't want a sports cruiser, totally impractical. Err ok then.

Interestingly or should I say tragically for my wallet our boat did get very little use over the last few years - in fact 150hrs over 5 years whilst with last owner on Thames.

I hope that we are getting there as there can't be much left to replace.....

Have PMd you about Hythe etc

We use Volvo TD100Gs in our container handlers at work rated at about 256 hp so commercially rated we get about 8000 hours before replacement, cost about £8000 each genuine Volvo factory service exchange.
We were doing an overload test once ie lifting 125% of full load, the engine stalled out due to not getting full throttle. As the engine stopped suddenly we heard the turbo howling, before it stopped spinning or we could restart, the turbo siezed solid.
WE also had a Perkins phaser rated at 90hp we did 27500 hours then got sick and sold the machine the engine was untouched.
We also have a Valmet engine on site no trouble but its only done 21000 hours yet.
None of our engines get injectors or valve clearences or pumps touched just oils and filters.

Yanmar 4LHA - 21 months 320 hours
2 oil filters
2 oil changes
2 fuel filters (1 primary 1 secondary) due to bug.....so 20 on Soltron too!
tappets at 200hrs - main dealer charged 50 quid and 1 needed adjusting and a 'quick clean' of the turbo unit.
A few moments every now and then for belt tension.....
As I spend 220 a year on anodes and oil for the outdrive the engine proving excellent value from a routine maintance perspective

I think that I should be encouraged by some of you spending 15s 3d on engines each year. Perhaps, yes perhaps as we may just possibly be getting there engine wise I may soon be able to feed and clothe my children...

Yes I am encouraged but somehow I feel that "The future's poor with V@l*o"

The engines do seem to run well and my real challenge is to cure the soot and low revs. Hopefully the new injectors and possibly re pitched props may help....

Re: Yet to replace

Nick, have you replaced the engine outer shroud yet? That may solve a number of problems
