When I were a lad Gales was based in Horndean. I had a girlfriend whose bedroom window overlooked the brewery.
HSB was allegedly the strongest beer in the UK. My brother and his mates used to drink a couple of pints then throw up. I'm not sure why, it tasted like a mixture of dishwater and sump oil. The BBB bitter at the Still and West was much nicer.
"Fuller’s Acquires Gale’s For £92m - 11 November 2005 at 08:38
The London-based brewer Fuller, Smith & Turner is to acquire the Hampshire beer maker Gale’s in a GBP91.8m deal.
Gale’s chairman, Charles Brims, said he had accepted the bid because of the anticipated negative impact on trading expected from the imminent ban on smoking in pubs. Increased competition made it difficult for small brewers to expand, Brims said.
"We're sad that it's the end of an era as an independent family brewer, but it's a very good deal,” Brims said.
The deal is expected to result in GBP3m in cost savings for the merged group. It has also been suggested that Fuller's may decide to close the Gale’s brewery at Horndean. However, Fuller’s said it planned to conduct a comprehensive review of the business before reaching a decision.
Gale's brews the HSB, Festival Mild and Butser Bitter brands."
The Horndean brewery is now a distribution centre for Fullers.
The acquisition of Gales in part contributed to some very healthy bonuses being paid 2007 to Fullers directors-who can earn up to 50% of salary for 'performance'.
Interestingly dedicated HSB drinkers in Hants appear to make no distinction between what were brewed in Horndean and what now comes out of Chiswick..
And,finally, since HSB goes head to head against Fullers own ESB,it is quite difficult to find in London as a regular beer, but the Red Lion in Barnes does a fine drop.So now you know.
