Do you take your cat on your boat?

Not sure how to take this one - guessing it's a wind-up - but, yes, our cat always comes sailing with us. He does, however, already have a lifejacket.

Mike Haley always has his two Burmese aboard Flyaway. Over the years I've seen pussies a'plenty aboard boats but it seems to me that Siamese and Burmese take to boating best.

not in Chatham!

aha...There is a pussy cat that rules the roost in MDL Chatham........
Our old moggy is bit too ancient to go boating now, however not so old that he could not follow us from home down to "The Ship" in Upnor a night or two ago, wait impatiently outside until we had had our pie and a pint, then accompany us back home for his dinner.
If you throw a stick for dog the mut will chase after it.
If you throw a stick a cat will think "If you are stupid enuff to throw your stick away you can go and get it yourself.

My Ma and Pa used to take Herman our Tabby Cat away on their Princess 38 back in the 80s he used to roam of an evening and a usual sight was the cat looking in the window of the boat behind of them eating their dinner.. He always came back to the boat before bedtime.
Not sure how happy he would of been wearing a life jacket..

The person who coined the phrase "like herding cats" for something very difficult had not tried to put a lifejacket onto one! :)

Actually, it's just occurred to me that the OP is from the editorial team of Motor Boat Monthly and it is probably a genuine request. If the lifejacket in question is the Baltic Maja, then I have just ordered one for our moggy and will be happy to respond, though I think the RSPCA would object if we intentionally threw him in!

Our male cat loved boating up to when he was 22, his sister 17; started them at 6 weeks old, & both fell in and were good swimmers. Much loved the upper Thames, not so keen when the boat was rolling around in the Wallet.

Cats are far more idependant creatures compared to dogs.
I would have thought a cat would need to be intruduced to boating at a very young age, as suggested. The same would apply to the idea of wearing a life jacket.

I have seen a few cats living with their boat owners on the inland waterways. Some of the cats were able to go off and explore at an unfamiliar mooring without their owners fearing thay would get lost. I suspect those that didn't venture our were kept in by their owners. One owner has a a landing net handy in case the cat thought a weed covered river edge was dry land.

I have heard of a 'ships cat' ...........but not a 'ships dog' .

Ours was a rescue cat and well over a year old when he arrived. We only intended to foster him while Cats Protection found a permanent home for him but we tried taking him to the boat and he seemed happy so he's still with us eighteen months later.

He's never been in a pet carrier - we have a journey of more than an hour to get to the boat and he sits on the back seat of the car all the way. He's not allowed to roam free - we take him out on a leash for a walk.

Hi all,

Does anyone take their cat on their boat?

We have a lifejacket for a cat that needs testing. Any volunteers?

Greg

Our Siamese has started Boating since June, and his slave would love to test a cat life jacket.

Probably the first test will be getting him to wear it!

Pic of him on deck and on the bridge follow, off Sharpness and off the M4 Bridge
