Re: And-and.....

All that lovely sunshine. I was in El Adem for a couple of weeks in 59 or 60.

Reminds me of a very old joke.

Officer was posted to El Adem, in the Libyan desert. After a couple of days, he asked the SWO (couldn't ask another officer) when the men got a bit frisky, where did they go for satisfaction. The SWO replied that, since the nearest town was 12 miles away, the men usually made use of Milly. Upon enquiring who Milly was, the SWO said 'Oh God bless you, sir, Milly is the camel kept in the little blue shed over there - if you ever want to use Milly, just come and see me, and I'll let you have the key to her shed'. The officer, being an officer, was rather put out, and certainly wasn't going to 'use' Milly!!
After a couple of weeks, the officer had had enough, so went to the SWO and asked for the key, so he could 'use' (nod, nod, wink, wink) Milly. The SWO smiled to himself, and handed over the key.
The officer opened the shed, went in and set to... 'using' Milly - who just stood there and took it. After some half an hour, he went back to the SWO to hand back the key. 'I've given that camel a really good shagging, SWO - I don't think she'll be of much use to anyone else today!'. 'Well, sir, the men like to use Milly to go into town, but I suppose we each have our little pecadillos'.

IMHO, of course.

Re: Sir,,,,,?

I have three brothers (there was six of us) and mum has a dog, she goes through all the names, including the dog, before she gets any of us right, bewildering isn't it? The phone is a nightmare and seeing as she lives in Oz, you can imagine the phone bills!

Arcane rituals and not a little prayer....

Still am wearing the guernseys my mother knitted for me 30 years ago. No mildew - same as Ian - ventilation and stove.
Starting elderly engine involves an element of ritual, and, increasingly, prayer.

most unreliable bit of kit - brand new echosounder and log!

How can you say it's the most reliable, if it's brand new??
