...and what about hipsters, bell-bottoms, flares and afghan coats. I remember them as if it was yesterday :)

Oh hang on, it was yesterday...in Next's window!

Is nothing sacred.

Re: By ecky thump

You should come to the midlands
we have rag and bone men ( tatters they are called)
There is the severn valley steam railway
there is an army surplus up by alrewas where you can get clothes to troop carries outboards the old Ducks and tank carriers ( it is an ace day out South bound A38 between Burton and Alrewas)

Park police are gone replaced by rangers ( sutton park site of first world scout jamboree)

we have a few old farts whom we cherish.
I have a key under the plant pot ( there are lots)

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'you're making a scene'.

Re: By ecky thump

What a sentimental bunch of old gits you all are. You really ought to get into the 21st century.

Mind you, we were moored up at Starcross (sorry to get something to do with boats into this thread!) a few weeks ago. A trainspotter special, with a Castle locomotive in full steam, thundered up from Dawlish towards Exeter.

Ahhhhhhhhh!

Thinking about it, do you remember when chicken was a luxury? Feeding sugar lumps to the milkmans horse. The blacksmith............Damn, you've got me at it now!

Regards

Re: By ecky thump

It's progress, just think that Castle class loco would stop automatically at red lights, now they they just ignor them.
The Castle would drag 14 coaches to London, now it takes two trains of 7 coaches ( do 4 diesel units create more or less polution than a Castle running Welsh steam coal ? ),
Castle's still ran on spring tides at Dawlish, new diesel have to stop, if they don't they do any way.

Progress is a funny thing

I wonder if anyone has ever made a modern steam engine for boats? Diesel fuelled, flash boiler for a quick getaway, sea water cooled condenser for the steam. Il'd have one!

When we used to go to youth clubs, Ours at the time was based in a church crypt, sixpence to get in and plenty of dark corners to hide away in with the latest girl of your dreams, not the kind your thinking off! used to finish at 9pm, then it was up to the pub for some under age drinking,Devonishes Highlife at 1/6P a pint, two pints and it felt like ypu was walking on air,We used to walk into the main bar and the landlord Vic was his name, used to say"come on boy's you know the rules in the back room' Then six penneth of chips on the way home, hoping they would hide the smell of beer from father! This thread really does make you feel old.

One of our local youth clubs (Willenhall Midlands ) was St Giles, they had a resident pop group on Fridays called Ambrose Slade later to drop the ambrose. They had a group at the baths next door do a one night stand, arrived in there Transit, unloaded there own equipment a group called the Beatles.

God,, I remember all of that and 1 more,, JUBBLIES,, frozen on a hot summers day at least an hours enjoyment and a frozen mouth at the end of it <sigh>.
What did we do to end up with all this PC sh*t when just looking at someone the wrong way can be construde as an affront to their civil liberties. When grabbing the kid thats just thrown a brick through your car window can land you in jail charged with assult, even though he was carrying a knife and threatened to gut you with it?
God WHERE DID WE GO WRONG?

Sorry Ian,

My last memory of there was being crew on a turning Pierre Louis around and then slamming into the basin lock gate lock (Colin was on holiday) ... and then not just knocking the 3 withy sticks down as we went out into a right hooley.

I think that just as yesterday the sun also seemed to shine, that the sun also rises tomorrow.

PS: I don't like the smell of the new paint in the 'lower' place.

Re: And-and.....

Has I remember , or age is effecting my memory. The those 'see through' drawings were in the 'Lion'. I do remember collecting them.
A few years ago they brought out a 'annual' style book of the old Eagle's Dan Dare comic strips.

Re: And-and.....

Nah! You're wrong, the lion may have had them, but the eagle had them I know as it was the only "comic" my father would buy us and allow in the house, he also wouldn't allow the "news of the world (screws)" in the house! By the way half a crown pocket money was worked for, we had a bloody big garden to dig and about 5 tons of manure to barrow in!

I was rich as well. I vividly remember losing a weekly half crown on one hand of 3 card Brag at school. I had a pair of Queens, he had Three Threes. I've never played the game again.
When I recount my simple pleasures of the 50s & 60s to my offspring they look at me as if I am a silly old fart. As you can see I've brought them up to be excellent judges of character!
