/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifMany thanks to the team that has worked hard to give us this to play with. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Change of any sort allways makes people a bit wary at first but I think its excellent .

If I can master the add a poll bit you can have your own say.

I daresay I will get used to it but I can't help thinking it is "change for change's sake"..... I thought the old format was fine... excellent even!

Now, how the hell do I get one of those smiley thingies?

Sorry, but I voted "no". For me it's too messy, too clogged up with silly little icons /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif, and I'm too old for all these changes. There was nothing wrong with the old set up - now I might change my mind, if it could filter all the rediculous threads we get this time of year, just 'cos people's bored - no passion, no aggro. no near misses, colregs, raggie versus stinkie etc. Roll on 2005.

I'm running for cover, but do have a great Xmas and New Year. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Change for change sake

At risk of appearing to campaign on the hustings for this poll let me at least assure everyone we are too busy here to do anything on a whim, let alone a fancy. Forum software was changed to assist us with keeping the environment secure, to provide better administration tools to deal with any attempts to abuse users and the facilities and to give us a means of scaling performance as more and more people pay the forums a visit.

The old code had reached the end of its life in those respects; it wasn't supported by the original developer and the type of code it employed was optimised to its limit by us and we had nowhere else to for future performance improvement.

The additional facilities compared to the previous forum come as standard in the software install - we've already tamed a few of them and we'll be taking a view on other aspects as time moves on. We'll also be looking at the template issues. We are also aware of some shortcomings in the code and will be working through any items on the bug list not addressed by future patches released by the software developer.

Thanks for the feedback - not expecting everyone to like what we have done but simply wanted to explain the change was for good reasons.

Re: Change for change sake

I see little advantage in it, but could accept it except for one thing. Whoever thought that dark blue lettering on black was a suitable combination needs his eyes tested (or will do shortly). <font color="yellow"> It's worse than yellow on white! </font>

Re: Change for change sake

You may not see much advantage in it, but as administrator of another boating forum I do ... this forum is far quicker than the previous one.
YBW team have done a sterling job in getting this one out. It is far more flexible for their needs - and gives us more to play with if we wish ... if you don't want all the bells and whistles - don't use them ...
As Kim said - change is not done for change sake - its done out of nessesity ... of course - the team could've spent extra time dumbing down this forum to match the visual design of the old one - but that would've been pointless and more ppl would've moaned about downtime with no apparent benefit ...

But hey - you can always get value for money here - you pay nothing so therefore anything you get is a bonus....

I personally think your comment is pretty unfair on those who built the new system because this seems to have been a problem that affected only some forumites. Certainly did not happen here.

John, One minor correction to your post - you speak as though the problem was over: <<...to have been a problem which affected...>>. The blue-on-blue text in parts of the index is still there and is a real pain in the *ss to those of us who still suffer from it. I have confidence that it will be cured eventually, so I will persevere, but it ain't fixed yet.

No, I did not mean to give that impression Tony.

As I said I have not had the problem so I would not know whether it was fixed or not.

Re: Not intended

Tony,
I'm just running up a Win98SE machine to fix a friends computer - I'll bung IE6 on and have a look - however, can you tell us what screen resolution your using (640x480,800x800,1024x768 etc) and how many colours ...

Ta!
Andrew
