Do you have a smoke detector on board

No . But we have a CO detector ..on a shelf in the aft cabin ....as exhaust pipes run through the aft cabin and you never know if there’s a leak where it may end up .
its an odourless silent killer .

I'd agree with the Velcro if you don't want the permanent option ,,,, you can at least then remove it easily to clean/replace etc although you'd be able to do that with the ones we have as they separate from the fixed back panel. I have 4 FireAngel WST630 s that are all linked so all sound if 1 detects anything, must admit I have screwed them into headlinings but on the principal that I'll always want detectors in place for as long as we own the boat.

Have you got any screw fixings for the vinyl coverings, just undo one in the right location and attach the smoke alarm, works for me. Don't like drilling new holes for alarms as when it comes to replacement you can bet the holes won't align. Mine are mounted on the wall not ceiling.

Just to add to the Velcro recommendation: I would save the visit to a dressmakers ( I doubt if you will find one anymore) as what they would use in the form of Velco is not very strong. I use similar stuff to hold cushion backs, etc on boat. It is called Dual-Lock by most sellers as Velcro is a registered and protected name.
You can buy in various sizes and rolls. Admittedly you have to stick to some surface but its easy enough to clean up after removal.

I screwed my smoke detector to the ceiling of the wheelhouse. If I need to change it in the future and the holes in the new detector don’t match I’ll just pop new holes in so they do.

I might try double sided tape
I wouldn’t put any kind of tape on headlining because you run the risk of tearing it if you or somebody else removes the tape in the future. Is there no convenient woodwork you could put the tape on?

Another vote for Command picture hanging strips .
I fixed my smoke alarm above the lower helm position , which happens to be a GRP liner on my boat.

I have the CO alarms on resting on shelves but also used Command strips to fix them to the the vinyl wall liner .
