Having a printer on board can be quite useful and I used to have a very small Canon, with a black only cartridge, which was great. It was very small, about 5 x 25 x 10cm and was brilliant. Sadly it died a while ago and I can't find anything anywhere near as small. Do you have a printer? What is it? And is it any good?

HP Deskjet 1420 cheap as chips to buy and running costs can be held down with pattern ink cartridges. Folds up fairly small for storage.

5 years old now.

Not essential and am not sure if I would replace it as almost anytime I need a printout I am within reach of some facility that could do it for me.

I have an HP Deskjet 3050A (USB,Network,Wifi, printer, scanner) and it has been very handy for printing flight reservations, insurance documents etc.

I could probably have persuaded someone to print but it is convenient. I bought this model because it was very cheap (£18 incl. Del.) and fits a bit of unused space in a locker beside my berth. Ink carts. are also very cheap but I haven't had to buy any yet.

I haven't any regrets about bringing it along or space it takes up.

Have to own up to having worked for HP for many years until last year. Got employee discount so no idea what normal prices are like for these things.

Another vote for HP. We have one of the 3 in one versions (copier/scanner/printer) and have found it far more reliable than the Epson it replaced. If not used for a while, the print heads on the ink cartridges can be wiped with a damp cloth and they're away again whereas, the Epson heads can't be accessed and wasted lots of ink on the "clean heads" cycle - they regularly gummed up.

I have a Lion battery powered version of the Canon ip100 colour ink-jet printer. It works well and is easily hidden away.

I use a HP2600N colour laser printer, and i also have a Canon Pixma ip2700 colour inkjet printer.

I wouldnt recommend a colour laser printer onboard unless you do lots of printing, a cheap inkjet is the way to go really

We have a Canon Pixma iP100, which has a colour and black cartridges. It is small - less than A4 footprint - and robust. We've had it since we left 4 summers ago and it's still working just fine. Cartridges are expnsive but we don't use it much and they seem to last about 6 months or so.

Me too!

I wouldn't be without it. Small, fast and the cartridges are not stupidly expensive either. See here.

I can also recommend the Canon iP100. I set to to only print greyscale, hoping that will save me some money on the cartridges.
I also have a tiny Canon scanner which is invaluable

Similar set up, except I brought the printer and scanner from home when we left. They dont get used often but are invaluable cos' when needed they are right there.

I've recently taken to removing the print cartridges and wrapping them in cling film between usages to try and extend the life - I'm sure ink was evaporating more quickly than used due to the long gaps between uses.

Yes - HP and a bit on the big side cos the one we took away died in Portugal and this was all we could get. Vital for printing travel bookings and copies of passports, ship's papers etc

HP 1018 BW laser 4 years old and no problems, what I like about lasers is that they always work we had inkjet before but every time we wanted to use it (say once every 6 months) we needed a new cartridge - expensive for 1 page! anyway the laser sits in the locker comes out prints page or two with no hassle and goes away again.
