Over the past several months I have been asked to send copies of engine manuals on Cds to several people via Pms.....

This I have done at my expense and without any requirement for those people involved to pay any kind of gratuity. This is ( as far as I'm concerned) why we all come on to this forum "to exchange information" on our pastime.

But, to be blunt.........

Having sent out over half a dozen of these Cds I have only recived one thank you note (Pm) for my troubles.

I'm at a loss as to why member cant even provide the simplest of human responses and say thank you, even if it's only to let one know that they have recived the information. I have listened to members over the years ask why certain bodies are aggressive and rude on the forum and I have formed the opinion that it seems from behind a screen most people lose the ability to be cival and aminable.

I discussed this with other forum members over the weekend and our combined opinion was that people only interested when they are getting something for nothing.

I have now decided that there will be no further Cds sent from Little Ships computer.

For the one person that did reply "thank you" for those that didnt......... :p

Ok rant over.......... wasn't it a great weekend :)

I don't blame you at all for hanging up your hat on this service. Not many would take the trouble you have. Totally unforgivable for the recipients to fail even a polite thank you note and I hope they are reading this thread.

Hey, have you finished with that Navigation disc dvd thinghie I 'Lent' you a year or so ago?
Cos someone else wants a look in.
Good weekend then?
Did you catch owt?
Cos a bunch of RIB hooligans are assembling to fish the Strait Sunday.
So find that CD Thinghie , else We'll lob a load of doggies on yer deck innit!

Sadly

that's the way a lot of folk are, as long as we understand that there are those that give and those that take, then all is well.

I gave a plotter to a forumite on the understanding that he left a hefty donation to the RNLI for it, I'm not sure if he did or not, I met a fella in Anitgua who I offered an awning to for his Halberg Rassy, he collected it from my home in the UK, in a rush, stuffed it into the back of his car and drove off, not a word of thanks or a backward glance!

I offered a couple of working sea toilets on the scuttlebutt forum, again expected the recipient to donate to the RNLI, he phoned and wanted them delivered to Gosport!

Same in a pub after a meal, you'll always get the one who is the "bill splitter" instead of the ok fella's; it's 20 quid each.........you get.... "well you had a steak, I only had the pie which was £2.00 cheaper and she had two glasses of wine................ when that starts I say, sod it I'll pay for the lot. And I'll bet the peeps who didn't say Ta are bill splitters, or "after you" to the bar!!

I spent all afternoon sorting a fella's engine in Villamoura in 80 degrees, not a word of thanks, not a beer nought.

Spent some time last weekend as one of the dinghys acting as a tug to assist a 60' steel barge out of a tight marina, blow me down they just drove away from the entrance without a wave, we were all gobsmacked..

It is bl**dy anoying when people take, tale, take and I sympathise with Littleship, doubt that will change the way we are though, I'd wager you'll still send out the odd CD.

Yer, yer right.
Can't find me wallet, bleedin ages since I saw it last:D

Anyway this lark about peeps not saying thanks etc
Poor form that is and bloody cheeky too.

Some peeps turn up and ask for advice.
Loads of answers and tips arrive sometimes.
Then nowt is heard from the OP!!
That's one I can't get me head round.

Tom -- do an hlb 'reverse physcology ad campaign'
Tell em yer can't have one anymore.

Demand will be that high you'l be able to charge for the service and be on nodding terms with the Postman;)

Well, I delivered a scooter 60 odd miles on a trailer today for an old pal of my Dad's & was given a couple of bottles of Vino. He also offered to refill my tank, but I politely declined - so it seems that the older generation still know their manners.

'Coz I suspect it is a generational thing & too many EXPECT stuff done for them.

The intrawebnethingy is full of free advice, free downloads and pretent free mates...all to easy to get (which is a good thing) because i love to research before i buy anything.

Im just a wipper snapper at 43 but remember back in the olden days when i used to take my Cortina into some hovel of a garage where you would find a n iol covered REAL mechanic and i would pick his brains and ask for advice, BUT i would always bung him a drink if he told me what i needed to know, most declined, but i insisted. Some would spend an hour ore more going through things with me, then even have a fiddle on the car just to show me, it may have been because i was polite and interested, but i also liked to pay my dues.

I bet he doesnt offer advice or help anymore, let alone tinker on your car just because you have shown an interest and been polite.

BTW send me one of them there cd's;)

Tom, I'm sorry I haven't said before, but, thank you, this is for the drink I'll have on board Little Ship when you're down our end of the island, and I promise not to leave fag burns on your varnished wood work(I don't smoke):D

But as said, costs nothing to say thank you.

As a yoof I was told ...."Tinkicker0, good manners cost nothing" said me Mum sternly. Knew I was in bother cos she used me full Sunday name.

I am not surprised you feel aggrieved Littleship. That is just not right.

I had the opposite when I lent a forumite some Mercruiser special tools. "Just leave em on me boat when you are finished" were the instructions.

Went down the marina the next weekend and he had left a decent bottle of wine as a thank you. :) So it's not a universal thing. Tools were as clean and in as good a nick as when he took them too, quite rightly.

Of course he has earned the right to borrow them again now :)

Tom

Maybe this will make you feel a little better. I found it inside one of my teak boards.
:) It will be in the box with the GPS that will be headed you way soon. I'm sure you can find just the spot for it on Littleship

Having sent out over half a dozen of these Cds I have only recived one thank you note (Pm) for my troubles.

I have sympathy, but to balance it up a bit, I had an old Valiant RIB and under-performing Honda 5hp stored at Swanwick with no idea what to do with them. I offered it FOC to a forumite. He drove to Swanwick, checked it out, loaded it up and took it away, then tried to force money on me. When I refused he sent a very nice gift of champers and flowers for SWMBO. He followed it up later with a PM on how well it was working out for him.

There are some gentlemen out there.

Sad, but not entirely surprising to read that Tom. I often get PM's out of the blue for advice, spend good time answering and then don't even get a reply, never mind a thank you. I did even PM a couple of them back a few days ago, asking if they got my messages, only then did i get a "thank you". Sad.

Also good to read some of the other members better experiences after helping folks. I also suspect you still be sending CD's out, i hope you get a thank you each time.

I used to receive vast numbers of pm's asking for computer advice. I was happy to give it on forums where everyone could benefit, and others could wade in. I usually answered anyway, but nearly always pointed out asking on the forum was probably better for all, unless there were very good reasons for going to pm (usually confidentiality issues). I really gave up almost altogether after I was flamed big time for not responding on the forum to a request for help, when others had already given very good expert advice on the thread. The idiot was barred for his multiple thread attacks on me, but the bad taste still hangs around, and I really don't bother that much these days.

oh dear this a bit poor. Standards have certainly dropped since i used to harangue the ruder elements and (sometimes) chase them off or bring them to order.

Here's a heartfelt WELL DONE to Littleship for sending out cd's of manuals. And to Brendan for helping me and others with ideas about things with plugs onnem. And anyone else on the forum who can rightly claim to be a "net giver" in all senses of the title.

I do hope you won't stop, and that you'll keep up the very good work. Just tellem!
