Do all boat owners have OCD?

Come on ... Confess... you might not have it anywhere else but get on your boat and you have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

All boat owners have... there is that one thing or more you just cannot stop yourself doing.

It may be setting the engine to a specific amount of revs, tiding lines in a specific way (they all might have to be a specific colour as well), continually checking temp or oil pressure, pumping the toilet an exact amount of times, putting a plot on the chart at a specific minute.

We know every little sound and creak on our boats and if there is an unusual, previously unheard of noise along the way heaven and earth will be moved to find it. (I know, I have just spent the last week obsessed with finding a new creak... you will be pleased to know I sorted it)

Once off the boat, in most people it goes away but on the boat we all have that one thing...

What is yours?

No, the Boss is notoriously untidy apart from sporadic moments of sorting stuff out.
Routine checks are done, Boss with head disappearing under engine covers etc.
Main everyday things are putting anchor light on/off, petrol/air in the dinghy and checking if we need to go somewhere for water.
Lines et al are tidied, decks cleaned once or twice a week. Inside daily which only takes a couple of hours.
Ah, got one, OCD sees me checking if we're almost out of milk or bread before going ashore :)

You always told me you had CDO as you can't have OCD since the letters are too untidy!

I find people with OCD are a bit compulsive. There is no reason to check the anchor ever 10 mins while underway, people with OCD only come sailing once and don't get an invite onboard again.

Life is too short for OCD.

I obsess about where things are put away. Everything has its place. If I didn't obsess about that I would never find anything again.

People who come sailing with me more than a couple of times quickly learn where things are.

Slackarses get caught out. "Ah, she'll do''...I just don't enjoy sailing with people whose boats are worn out, nothing is checked, its all sloppy..

+1 I am the same, particularly about safety kit and tools that may be needed in a hurry but surly that's not OCD but being prepared.

While I would not say I am OCD I am fussy about the boat and how things are done and how it's looked after.

I think it might be OCD, but without the "C" and the "D". :)

yes - i do have a mild form of ocd - but it manifests itself on the boat by having a routine that checks everything on leaving and before getting underway. so that's not a bad thing is it?

Nostrodamus...you seem to work almost as bizarre shifts as me. I wonder if doing odd hours makes us start numerous threads on lightweight themes, just for attention?

Three from you this morning, since 5:40...

...I'll challenge you, if you keep doing it...umm...let's see now...

...how thin dare I go, to benefit from lighter mooring lines' extra stretch?

...and, do French sailors all point slightly too close to the wind?

...and, do certain hull colours discourage osmosis?

...and, what's the ideal boating sandwich (not including balsa core)?

...and, does your marina smell more like seaweed than sewage?

...and, do you prefer a long leg of a journey with the wind slightly ahead or astern of the beam? Why?

...and, have you noticed motorboats tending to obey speed limits more, this season?

...and, is it me or does the anchor feel heavier at weekends?

...and, do you find the Lavac more comfortable on port or starboard tack?

...and, are catamarans uglier with reverse sheer?

...and, do Daily Mail readers repair their boats using newspaper-maché?

There we are, Nostro..your next full week's worth of early morning froth. Now you can have an extra 90 mins in bed per day! :)

Nothing personal, I know I've initiated a fair amount of dung on this forum myself over the years. Wasn't even aware I was doing it.

Damn, I was working up to do 'Do you find you sail faster in periods of high humidity' but I had better not now :-(

I have higher standards on board than I do with home, car work etc.

Will happily through money and time and effort to get things right on board, much more laid back about things elsewhere. Don't have 1 single thing but I want things done correctly, e.g. Up to date charts, pilot book, almanac. Minor faults corrected ASAP.

SWMBO otoh is obsessive about fenders and mooring lines. She is presently eyeing up the special deals for buying 4 fenders with a view to buying 8. Not sure where we would put 8 but that doesn't count. I know that by this time next year I will be proud owner of at least 4 new fenders, Many new mooring lines, all in pairs and probably colour coded to distinguish between different lengths.
