hi all jst a quicky really thinking of a trip 2 bembridge from northney marina was jst wondering roughly how far it is? and roughly how long it would take on a gd day?
Hi westy. It's about 15 miles. First and last bits are restricted so an hour or so if you have a planing boat. There's a wiggly and shallow bit on the way in to Bembridge. Check the pilotage books for depths. There's a thread here where the subject is discussed: Bembridge
Yes, there is a bar at Bembridge, should be fine at high tide. You can actually see it when you go over it, I think it's basically parallel with the first set of channel bouys but I can't remember.
We do the trip from Sparkes to Bembridge way quite regularly - we normally do it in about an hour, with a bit of fast stuff, and a bit of cruising.
The entrance to the harbour is a real tricky one - a slalom approach is marked by buoys, and you can only leave/enter so many hours before/after high water.
We only entered the harbour once, with a friend who was familiar with the entrance - usually we anchor or drift just off the beach slightly to the west of the harbour (a very nice spot for a picnick)
Really - that entrance is not as tricky as ppl make out - it is clearly marked by buoys and if you aim to enter HW +-1hour there is plenty of water for all but the most deep draft boats ...
We took our 6' fin keel in there without incident - just by following the buoys ..
Oh - don't be fooled by following a bigger boat in - they may have shallower draft than you!
