Dinghy Storage on the Hamble

My new boat is just a bit too big to fit on my old Hamble River Auth mooring so I have had to move right up the river to a new spot just off Universal.

Nice mooring but bloomin' miles from my dinghy storage at the RAFYC. Not a prob at the weekend when the Club launch is running but I tend to use the boat during the week as well.

I have asked this question before, a couple of years back, and as a consequence joined the RAFYC, but really just having a second think about it, in hope of new information, due to the distance I now have to 'dinghy'.

You can pay to store a dinghy ashore or afloat at the marinas. Arrange the words 'off' and 'rip' into a well known phrase or saying.

I've seen people launching tenders from the yard immediately upstream of Mercury (is it called Salterns?) No idea what the costs are and whether storage is possible.

You could try the Elephant or Deacons, but they are probably as far upstream as RAFYC is down.

There are some houseboats on the Universal pontoons - those furthest downstream. Whether for the price of a beer or three you could come to some informal arrangement...
 
Maybe Tucker & Munday by Mercury

I had a Tucker and Munday mooring mid river opposite Mercury for a couple of years. I kept a dinghy in a rack in their yard. Whether it would be available to non mooring holders I don't know but Derek is on 023 8045 3124.

sometimes had to wait for the tide as it gets dry in the creek by their slip on LW springs but not that restrictive

cost me a couple of hundred £ a year.

I dropped into Universal to ask the lads in the office if they did dinghy storage...the answer was yes, but its £900 and something a year ! I didn't bother asking it that included VAT.

I'm so near to their outermost walkashore pontoon I reckon maybe a long ladder is the answer !

Ahem, I was thinking of an arrangement with a houseboater, not with the sharks in the office.
 
I tried various deep water moorings from Chichester to Portsmouth, but also considered the Hamble etc.

The real truth is, you'll rely on the yard / club launch ( don't even think about using an inflatable from the boot of the car, you need a small version of a lifeboat to get there safely ).

Some people with fin keel boats at my club keep the cruisers on exposed deep moorings and a large tender in the comfy marina, which seeing how the prices add up seems daft to me !

I found that almost everywhere, the boat may be in deep water, but getting the tender ( if one could keep it anywhere nearby ) was a different, very tidally restricted matter.

Twister Ken's idea of an informal arrangement may work well, but you'd always be at the mercy of the tender moorers and whether they stayed put.

2 options really; pay up and grin, or buy a boat which will settle on a close inshore, affordable & right by the pub, half tide mooring ! :)

My neighbour on piles on the Hamble used to do just that - inflatable in the car, pump it up in Mercury, and row across. He had to aim off a bit, depending on the tide, but he was there most weekends, and never seemed to get swept out to sea, or up to Botley. Dunno whether he paid Mercury any money.

Come on, its no big deal really! If you're boating during the week, just get yourself a slightly bigger tender with more powerful outboard and at 6kts you'll be up near Mercury from the RAFYC in no time.

Hmmmm..well it just took me just over 15 mins with a 6hp on the back of a decent inflatable. happy to do it in the summer but Autumn and Spring I'm nor so sure !

A simpler answer for the occasions when you need to accomodate crew and baggage is to phone Andy at the River Taxi on 07827 157155 up to about 7pm daily during the summer starting around 9.00am.
Would be worth enquiring as to price now as recently increased but reckon on say £5 each way (3 persons) depending upon the distance from club to mooring. Saves the messing around with pumps if an inflatable, or leave the dinghy on the pontoon, if you have one, for use when arriving back after the taxi hours.

My experience is that the pink taxis are not keen on going up the river near the end of their shift. They once refused to come up for us (just below Mercury) at about 10 minutes to their closing time, and we had to hitchhike ashore in a passing RIB. (9-5 winter, 9-6 summer)
 
TK I think that now the owner of the River Taxi is operating it himself there is a change of attitude by the driver! I should add that the yellow boat is being taken out of service in a week or two for replacement engine, the pink one will still operate though.

Yellow taxi has put its prices up by around 75%. Dread to think what the charge is now from Hamble to Universal.
